Reigning champion Juho Hänninen has urged fans not to miss the live coverage of SATA Rallye Açores, round four of the FIA European Rally Championship.

Eurosport Events, the ERC promoter, will produce for live television broadcast four stages of the gravel event, including the famous Sete Cidades stage, which will be shown twice on Friday 26 April on Eurosport and RTP Açores.

Hänninen, who has competed in the Açores on four occasions, said: “We all know how well Eurosport are doing the live coverage and for sure I would recommend that people watch the Sete Cidades stage. It’s one of the best stages that there is to film because the landscape is so spectacular and it’s a really big challenge for the drivers.”

The Sete Cidades stage runs around the rim of a volcanic crater lake measuring five kilometres in diameter. With drops of 400 metres to the water below, there is quite simply no margin for error.

ERC GEARS UP FOR SUPER SEPTEMBER
The FIA European Rally Championship is gearing up for Super September following confirmation of the Croatia Rally’s date change.

A regular fixture on the ERC schedule for several years, the Croatia Rally will switch from 6-8 June to 26-28 September with Rally Poland moving forward two weeks to 13-15 September to accommodate the change.

With Barum Czech Rally Zlín concluding on 1 September, it will be flat-out action and serious competition ahead in the ERC during the month of September.

Here’s a brief summary of what’s in store:

Barum Czech Rally Zlín (30 August-1 September)
One of Europe’s most difficult events due to the proliferation of high-speed blasts through forests and woodland, sections of broken Tarmac, a high likelihood of intermittent showers and the bumpy nature of some of the roads, the rally attracts huge numbers of fans each year.

Rally Poland (13-15 September)
Celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2013, the spectacular gravel rally is one of the oldest in the world. Running through Poland’s stunning lake district, base town Mikołajki hosts a popular superspecial (pictured).

Croatia Rally (26-28 September)
A mainstay of the ERC for several years, the Croatia Rally is famous for its slippery asphalt and big spectator following. Juho Hänninen won the event on route to ERC title glory in 2012 with the factory ŠKODA Motorsport team.

KOPECKÝ LINKED TO CANARIAS HAT-TRICK BID
Double winner Jan Kopecký is set to chase a hat-trick of triumphs on Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés from 21-23 March.

Kopecký won the ERC season-opening International Jännerrallye in Austria last month and is set to return to ERC action on the island event in a ŠKODA Motorsport Fabia Super 2000. Kopecký won Rally Islas Canarias in 2010 and 2012.

Although no official confirmation has been forthcoming from ŠKODA Motorsport, event organisers tweeted: “He isn't still registered, but we can count on him.”

The all-asphalt rally features 14 stages over a competitive distance of 246.34 kilometres. Following the ceremonial start in Las Palmas at 20:30hrs local time on Thursday 21 March, the action begins with the 13.57-kilometre Moya stage at 07:48hrs on Friday 22 March and finishes with the 16.23-kilometre Vallesco stage, which goes live at 16:12hrs on Saturday 23 March.

ANDREUCCI SET FOR 208 R2 ACTION
Multiple Italian champion Paolo Andreucci could be at the wheel of a Peugeot 208 R2 when the FIA European Rally Championship and Andreucci’s domestic contest join forces on Rally San Marino in July.

The ERC and CIR (Campionato Italiano Rally) will run together on two occasions in 2013 with Rallye Sanremo in October also counting for ERC and CIR points.

Andreucci has campaigned a Peugeot 207 Super 2000 in recent seasons but with his Peugeot Italia team targeting a switch to a 208 Type R5 when the car is ready for competitive use later this year, Andreucci will switch to a R2-specification 208 in the meantime.

With its reduced power output in comparison to the ERC’s pacesetting Super 2000 machines, Andreucci is unlikely to be a contender for overall points. However, he will be a force in the hugely competitive ERC 2WD Championship.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: JÁNOS PUSKÁDI
Likeable Hungarian János Puskádi is a busy man. Not only is he embarking on what he hopes will be a six-event ERC campaign in a ŠKODA Fabia Super 2000, the 35-year-old also runs his own team under the Eurosol Racing Team Hungary banner with countryman Zoltán Bessenyey driving a Honda Civic Type R in the ERC 2WD Championship. Puskádi began his 2013 ERC bid on Rally Liepāja-Ventspils in Latvia earlier this month – his first event on snow – and will be back in action in Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés from March 21-23. Puskádi has previous experience of the asphalt showcase and will be a contender for a points finish.
