2013 Daytona 500: NASCAR Sprint Cup Qualifying Order & Preview

Two weekends ago was the NFL's annual Super Bowl, but today is qualifying for the Super Bowl of racing! The 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup season series kicks off for the 55th time at the paved 2.5-mile d-shaped oval at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida.
NASCAR has been running at the Florida-based circuit since 1959 when Lee Petty won the first event.
But where did he qualify ?
The answer is 15th.
And that is the theme to our 2012 Daytona 500 qualifying preview: Winning the Pole for the Daytona 500 is great for press releases and news for a few days, but it in no way is a reliable prediction of who will win the Daytona 500.
In fact, the last Daytona 500 Pole winning car that went on to victory in the race was Dale Jarrett in 2000. Before that was Jeff Gordon in 1999.
So it has happened.
But before those two occasions, you have to look back to the 1980s to establish a trend related to taking the pole and winning at Daytona. Bill Elliott won the Daytona 500 twice (1987 & 1985), Carl Yarbourgh (1984) and Buddy Baker in 1980.
So enjoy qualifying! Its going to be another exciting day and great glory will be available for the Pole winner... for a few days. But the real glory is reserved for coming out on top, next Sunday.
