Countdown To Daytona For Thursday, Feb 21, 2013

There are three days left before the Feb. 24 Daytona 500; hence, today’s number is:
3: The car number Dale Earnhardt Sr. drove to 67 of his 76 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories, all 67 with Richard Childress Racing. Perhaps Earnhardt’s most significant win was his long-awaited triumph in the 1998 Daytona 500, his 20th attempt in NASCAR’s most prestigious race. The No. 3 has been inactive since Earnhardt died as a result of injuries sustained in an accident on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500, though team owner Richard Childress is contemplating using the number again when his grandson, Austin Dillon, ascends to full-time competition in the Cup series.
