Champion Spark Plugs Names Tristan Nunez Finalist In Search For A Champion Contest
Sportscar racer Tristan Nunez is one step closer to securing his second straight championship in under six months after Federal-Mogul's ChampionĀ® Brand named the 17-year-old a finalist in the firm's national web-based 'Search for a Champion' contest. Nunez is one of 15 finalists all competing for the grand prize of $50,000 in addition to the $5,000 each finalist has received for making the finals.

"I'm so stoked to be a finalist with Champion Spark Plugs," said Nunez. "We had a lot of fun creating the video at Petit Le Mans last year and I really thought it'd be awesome to be apart of the Champion family. Being able to win this sponsorship would be huge for my program in 2013. With moving up another level in motorsports means more races and bigger budgets. This would be a huge help towards our racing budget for this year."
Nunez, a high school junior from Boca Raton, Fla., is one of three finalists in the asphalt division of the contest, which also picked finalists in other categories including: Earth, Water, Snow & Ice, and Everything Else. The 15 finalists were determined based on viewer voting on Champion's website as well as input from NASCARĀ® driver and team owner Kevin Harvick, who helped the team at Champion judge the submitted videos based on demonstrating their ability to win a racing championship in 2013.
"Thousands of grassroots racers are looking for exactly this type of support to help them win championships in 2013, and the Champion brand is ready to make it happen for a second straight year," Harvick said. "The videos are fantastic this year, which tells us that each of these talented racers has as much passion for their sport as I do for auto racing. And it shows that they'd love nothing more than to take their racing programs to the next level with a Champion sponsorship."
The Sports Illustrated-named "Face in the Crowd", Nunez, became the youngest sports car racing champion when he capped a mindboggling 2012 season that included 11 wins, 12 poles, and seven track records in his rookie season in the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship Powered by Mazda for Performance Tech Motorsports. Following his season, he also closed out an impressive international tour for Team USA and Cliff Dempsey Racing when he capped the trip by besting 120-car entries to seize the Walter Hayes Trophy grand finale at Silverstone. He then closed out 2012 by competing for MLB star C.J. Wilson's team in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill.
For 2013, Nunez was selected by Mazda to compete in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona in the No. 00 Visit Florida "Must be the Sunshine" Mazda. The SpeedSource team was forced to retire with a rear main seal failure, sidelining Nunez and his team for the balance of the prestigious event.
Final voting for the Champion Spark Plugs grand-prize winner is open from February 22, 2013 through March 24, 2013, with the ultimate winner being revealed by Harvick on April 2, 2013.
