2013 Daytona: LIVE NASCAR Nationwide Race Sunday Update - 28 Fans Injured, Two Critical

By Mike Sulka

Following a massive crash at the finale of the 2013 NASCAR Nationwide season opener at Daytona International Speedway in advance of the 2013 Daytona 500, DIS President Joie Chitwood indicated that, "First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans."

The 12-car pile up occurred as the leader was hit from behind heading to the finish line. The front portion of one of the cars - the No 32 - pierced a section of fencing leaving the engine and a tire. It is thought that the other tire on the front went up high in the grandstands, though that is not clear at this time.

After reviewing the available video, the 32 began to crash, appeared to be headed into another car along the wall. Then misfortune and momentum took over with the 32 getting hit from the pursuing field in the rear which lifted the rear into the air. It initially was parallel to the fencing, but the front spun towards the safety fence and pierced it.

Chitwood would continue regarding the fans, "We transported 14 people off property and 14 were treated at our on-track care center."

Multiple publications are reporting that two fans are were in critical condition. One of those fans was a 14-year old child, who is listed as stable. The adult fan listed in critical condition does have head trauma - with life threatening implications.

All we can do at this time is hope, and pray for the best.

As for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup opener - the Daytona 500 - repairs have been completed, but hearts continue to be heavy.
