The group, including front man, Joe Lewis, traces its roots to Central Texas. Lewis started playing guitar after picking one up at the Austin pawn shop where he worked. For the next few years, he performed around the Austin music scene with a blues trio he assembled. The trio had grown by 2007 when Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears first took the stage and signed a record deal with Lost Highway Records. The group quickly started making a name for itself with stand-out performances at major music festivals such as Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. The band released its first four-song EP on Jan. 29, 2009, and by March of the same year, was wowing fans at the SXSW Music, Film and Interactive Festival in Austin while releasing its debut album, Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is!
Other notable performances include shows at the Bonnaroo, Coachella, Bumbershoot, Outside Lanes and Sasquatch! music and arts festivals. The band has also enjoyed national exposure through appearances on television shows, such as “The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” and “Austin City Limits.”
The band continues to maintain a robust touring schedule. Its latest album, Scandalous, featuring the oh-so-scandalous single, “Mustang Ranch,” was released in March 2011.
