Taking Motorsport To The Next Generation

BNT V8 SuperTourers and Round Two sponsor Mike Pero Real Estate are to open the gates for all of Christchurch’s school children and their parents at the second round of the spectacular series on Saturday March 9th.

Entry to the circuit and the action on Saturday will be 100% free for the city’s schoolchildren and their parents and there will be plenty of opportunity to see the country’s fastest V8 touring cars in action and meet stars of the show like Greg Murphy, Shane van Gisbergen and 2012 series champ Scott McLaughlin.

The Saturday programme at the Powerbuilt Tools Raceway, Ruapuna, will include two 45 minute test sessions for the V8 SuperTourers, qualifying and a busy schedule of support category races. Organisers are aiming to get up to 3,000 youngsters and their parents involved in the day.

“It’s our way of giving something back to the city after the problems it’s had over the past two years, but that’s just one of the reasons we have decided to do this” said Series Chairman Ray Noonan.

“Christchurch played host to two great SuperTourer meetings last year and the Powerbuilt Tools Raceway stepped in late in the day this time to fill this date. In that regard, this is one way we can say ‘Thank you Christchurch’.

Pero, a long-time sponsor and supporter of motorsport, added that Christchurch was a great choice for the unique initiative. “Motorsport as an industry in this country needs to be making a much bigger effort to get out to the next generation. I loved the fact that SuperTourers took their drivers to schools to meet the young fans last November and this is a logical extension of that. New Zealand and Christchurch particularly has always produced more than its fair share of talented drivers and engineers and the there is a real motorsport industry in this country. We want this to be a boost for that, to inspire youngsters to get involved in in a sport and industry that Kiwis are actually very good at.”

Any school in Christchurch can register and there is no limit to the amount of youngsters or parents that can come along – all simply have to register on the V8ST web site (www.v8st.co.nz) with a request for tickets and an address where they can be sent.

A special driver signing session and pit lane tour will also be organised for the Saturday so that the youngsters can see how the engineers work and how the cars are prepared for racing, as well as meeting the star drivers.
