Today’s 15-minute qualifying session on the 3.4-mile, 20-turn road course set the grid for tomorrow’s 3 PM (Central Time) race start. The quickest of the Porsches was the No. 59 Brumos Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup with the remaining six GRAND-AM spec Cup cars filling the GT class field.
Flag-to-flag coverage of the race is scheduled to air beginning at 5:30 PM Eastern Time on SPEED. Live timing and scoring of the event can be found at www.GRAND-AM.com while the Motor Racing Network will broadcast the race live on MRN affiliate radio stations. Check local listings for specifics broadcast details.
Brumos Racing had been quiet much of the day in practice leading into the early evening qualifying session. However, the team, which has once-again become synonymous with Porsche motorsport success, made noise when it counted. 2011 GRAND-AM GT class champion Andrew Davis, who will share the No. 59 Brumos machine with fellow GRAND-AM champ Leh Keen (Charleston, S.C.), quickly set his best lap early in the session. Utilizing the optimum tire performance, the Athens, Ga.-resident lapped the track in two minutes, 10.173 seconds to take third on the grid.
"Being here at the Circuit of the Americas for the first time is very exciting," said Davis. "The track is a lot of fun. Definitely a combination of skills: technical, high-speed, hard braking, a little bit of everything. It’s really putting the Brumos Racing crew to work to get our No. 59 911 up to the front. Every session we have been quicker. For qualifying we were able to put the hammer down and run the quickest lap we have yet. The two cars in front of us seem to be in a league of their own. We’re going to have a very strong car for the race and Leh and I are going to be able to get Brumos Porsche back up to the front where it needs to be."
Dallas-based Park Place Motorsports, a new team to professional sports car racing, brought three entries from its shop affiliated with the Park Place Porsche dealership. Patrick Lindsey of Santa Barbara, Calif. drove the quickest of the three, the No. 73, to sixth in class, second-quickest Porsche. Lindsey’s best lap was a 2:10.958. He shares the No. 73 with Porsche factory driver Patrick Long (Belleair, Fla.). John McCutchen lapped the No. 71 Park Place Porsche in 2:18.958. The Dallas resident will co-drive with Jason Hart of Flower Mound, Texas and Chuck Cole. The No. 72 of Mike Skeen (Durham, S.C.) and Mike Vess qualified in 2:24.645 with Skeen behind the wheel. The No. 71 and No. 72 qualified 14th and 15th respectively.
Magnus Racing, this weekend teamed with Dallas’ Boardwalk Porsche, will start eighth in GT class. Team owner John Potter (Salt Lake City) toured the track in 2:11.517. 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year Andy Lally (Dacula, Ga.) is Potter’s co-driver. The paring won the inaugural GRAND-AM North American Endurance Championship for Magnus in 2012.
Mülhner Motorsports brought two Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars to Austin. The No. 18 was driven by Canadian Kyle Marcelli to a lap of 2:12.601 to take 12th on the grid while Chilean Indy car and F1 veteran Eliseo Salazar drove the No. 19 to a time of 2:16.021; good for 13th. Dion von Moltke of Choral Gables, Fla. will share the No. 18 on Saturday while Eduardo Costabal will co-drive with his countryman Salazar in the 19.
