Solid Start For Spirit Of Daytona Racing In Texas Grand-Am Debut

Spirit of Daytona Racing will start Saturday’s GRAND-AM of the Americas Presented by GAINSCO from the third row as Ricky Taylor and Richard Westbrook look to make the most out of the first sprint race of the 2013 GRAND Am Rolex Sports Car Series season, staged at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas.

Taylor qualified the No. 90 VISITFLORIDA.com Chevrolet Corvette DP fifth during Friday’s 15-minute qualifying session which set the grid for Round 2 of the 2013 Rolex Sports Car Series championship.

“I think we probably had a better car (than fifth place), but we caught another car on our fast lap which was kind of disappointing,” said Team Owner Troy Flis. “But as a whole we have a great car for tomorrow. We’re excited – it is great to be racing on this track, and hopefully tomorrow will be a good day for us.”

Taylor will open the race from behind the wheel of the Corvette machine before turning the car over to Richard Westbrook to power to the finish. While the multi-time GRAND-AM pole winner was happy with the car, he wasn’t as happy with how the results sheet looked at the end of the session.

“I’m disappointed that we weren’t able to capitalize on the clear laps that we should have been able to,” said Taylor. “I think we have a great car--I thought we had a pole car. But tomorrow’s the race and that’s all that counts but I would have liked to start the year out with the pole.”

With two practice sessions in the morning hours before the late afternoon qualifying session, the No. 90 VISITFLORIDA.com Corvette DP showed speed as the team and drivers both quickly adapted to the new circuit with the Corvette machine posting the second quickest time of the first practice.

Spirit of Daytona Racing will take part in a final practice session tomorrow morning ahead of the 2.75-hour race which is set to start at 4:00 PM (ET).
