Edwards Recovers To Put Stevenson Motorsports Fourth On COTA Grid

The Stevenson Motorsports No. 9 Camaro will start GRAND-AM’s inaugural Circuit of the Americas event from the second row of the 62-car combined class grid as drivers Matt Bell and John Edwards are set to take their first race laps around the new circuit in Round 2 of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series championship.

Friday’s schedule was an intense one with two practices ahead of the 15-minute qualifying session, but the Stevenson group was immediately quick off the truck as Bell set the fastest time of the day’s first practice. The team utilized the two practice sessions to continue to learn where to best unlock the speed on the new 3.4-mile Texas road course.

While Bell is usually the driver tabbed to qualify and run the opening race stint, the team opted to have Edwards, who has been suffering a fever, qualify the car in an effort to keep him from having to run a long stint in tomorrow’s race. Despite the last 24 hours being highly uncomfortable for Edwards, he was right at home when he jumped into the car and posted the fourth quickest time of the field.

“I think there are some cars that could be a bit quicker than us in the Continental race - being fourth, we’re not terrible, but still slightly off the pace from where we want to be,” said Edwards. “It’s a bit disappointing that we weren’t on pace at Daytona and were penalized by the series with the smaller throttle body for this race. I feel like we’re fighting uphill just a little bit, but we’ll see what we can put together tomorrow.”

Stevenson Motorsports will look to move forward during the 2.5-hour event as the team targets another strong result after having finished sixth in the opening round at Daytona.

“We’re very happy right now, said Team Manager Mike Johnson. “John (Edwards) got really sick last night and wasn’t able to do any practice yesterday or today. He showed up right before qualifying and put the thing fourth only two 10ths off the pole. Matt (Bell) has been doing a great job. He’s had the car at the top 1-2 every session all weekend long and it’s kind of good. It’s great to come here and start off right where we want to be. There are some places where some contact can happen but we’re starting up front, we have a fast car, we can keep it up front and we’re just looking for a great result. We started the season with a sixth when we usually leave Daytona in 20th so it’s a great start to the year for sure.”

The compact two-day GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge schedule will see Stevenson Motorsports return to the track for the 2.5-hour race at Saturday at 11:05 AM (ET). SPEED will televise the event March 9 at 4:00 PM (ET).
