Action Express Racing Set For Second-Row Start In Austin

After learning a new track quickly and making consistent improvement through a quick two days of practice, Action Express Racing will start the GRAND-AM of the Americas presented by GAINSCO and Total from fourth (No. 9 Action Express Corvette DP) and eighth (No. 5 Action Express Corvette DP) on the grid on Saturday.

The race marks Round 2 of the 2013 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series championship as GRAND-AM makes an inaugural visit to the Formula 1-grade facility.

Burt Frisselle led the Action Express Racing charge with his fast lap time of 2:01.127-seconds around the 3.4-mile circuit in the No. 9 Corvette DP that he will share with Joao Barbosa.

“I haven’t qualified a car in a while so I was probably more nervous than I needed to be the whole day but this is such a good team,” offered Burt Frisselle. “The team did an engine change today and still gave me enough time to go out and do a mock qualifying run. So hats off to all of the Action Express guys, Team Chevy, and all of these guys. Fourth is not what our goal is. Our goal is to qualify on pole and to lead every lap. But it’s a good start, we have a good car. We’re going to go to work tonight because we have to get better when you look at the time chart. But I couldn’t be with a better group of guys – they make my job easy.”

Even though COTA is one of the longer circuits on the GRAND-AM schedule, the traffic from the healthy field of DP entries frustrated the sister No. 5 Corvette DP in its effort to take a top-five position. But with nearly three hours of racing to determine the winner on Saturday, the group knows that the same fundamentals that saw the team score a breakthrough 1-2 finish at Detroit last year will play a key role once again on race day.

“I was really hoping that we could have been closer to the front, but on the ‘perfect’ lap for the tires, I just got caught up with another car and I lost the lap,” said Brian Frisselle who will team with Christian Fittipaldi in the No. 5 Corvette DP. “But the fact that Burt was fourth shows a little bit of the effort that Action Express has been putting in, and I hope we can execute our race plan and move up at the start of the race.”

The Action Express group rallied to make a swift engine change in between practices and spent the day working through set-ups on the two cars as GRAND-AM staged two practice sessions ahead of qualifying.

“We’re thrilled to be back racing,” said Team Manager Gary Nelson. “Each lap - as qualifying showed - we got faster and faster. And we’d like to keep that trend going all the way to the end of the race! I love this track. I really enjoy it. I’ve always enjoyed Texas anyway, but coming here is really amazing. It’s a first-class place.”

History will be made as the green flag waves for the first-ever GRAND-AM of the Americas Presented by GAINSCO and Total event at 4:00 PM (ET). SPEED will televise the race beginning at 5:30 PM (ET).
