JOSH HILL (No. 75 Dodge/Sycuan Casino/RCH Racing/Bel-Ray/Suzuki Z450)
TALK ABOUT SPENDING TIME THIS WEEK AT RICKY’S TRACK AND HOW BENEFICIAL IT WILL BE: “It’s going to be good for us. We’re going to get out on some east coast soil…sandy…looser-style stuff, which will be great to prepare for Daytona. The track at Daytona is loose, bumpy and has deep ruts. It’s the kind of track that you really can’t replicate out west.”

TALK ABOUT DAYTONA AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO RACE AT THE HISTORIC WORLD CENTER OF RACING: “Ya, it’s cool. I’ve had some good times and good races at Daytona. Back in 2009 I was having a really bad year with some injuries and Daytona was the race that broke me out of my funk. I was able to win a Heat Race and had a killer battle with Chad Reed. Holding somebody off for eight laps on that track is a great feeling.”

DAYTONA SEEMS TO HAVE THE “MOTO X” FEEL TO IT. DO THE RIDERS FEEL THAT RACING INSIDE THE BIG TRI-OVAL? “For sure. It’s more of an outdoor feeling than Supercross. The jumps are Supercross spec, but the rest of the track is rough and bumpy. It’s kind of a hybrid between an MX and SX, even more so than the Monster Cup.

LAST WEEKEND YOU WERE REALLY SICK. HOW’S THE HEALTH COMING INTO ROUND 10 AT DAYTONA? “Last weekend I had something like Strep Throat. I came off the track and was throwing-up blood. It was nasty. I tried to get the bike in the Main but it was just too much and I couldn’t ride like I wanted to. I went to the Asterisk Care Center after the race and about 48 hours later I started to feel like a different person. I had some infection to get out of my system and today (Tuesday) was the first day that I felt like a real person again. I should be good to go for Saturday.”

BROC TICKLE (No. 20 Dodge/Sycuan Casino/RCH Racing/Bel-Ray/Suzuki Z450)
TENTHS-OF-A-SECOND ARE SEPARATING THE 450SX CLASS THIS YEAR IN QUALIFYING. CAN YOU IDENTIFY WHERE THAT DIFFERENCE IN SPEED IS ON THE TRACK? “The speed is really all over the track. It just adds up all over the place. You can barely see a tenth of a second on a stopwatch and it becomes just cleaning up your lap. It’s as simple as not being on the brakes and coasting heading into a corner …carrying that momentum through the corner and not scrubbing off speed.

It’s just fine-tuning little things whether that’s going low over the triples, running through a corner a little bit cleaner, clearing all the jumps clean and not clip and landing. There’s a lot of things that can save you speed. It all adds up through the course of a lap. It’s such close racing right now and it feels like the times are getting even closer.”

SO MUCH ATTENTION HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO RACE STARTS AND GATE POSITIONS IN THE HEATS AND MAIN EVENTS. HAVE YOU HAD TO CHANGE YOUR APPROACH TO QUALIFYING? IS IT LESS ABOUT A FEW SPRINT LAPS AND MORE ABOUT RIDING HARD FOR SIX OR SEVEN LAPS? “We’re on a schedule for practice and timed practice so that we can get our laps in each session. We do a combination of both – getting the track down and sprinting some good laps.

“A guy like (Ryan) Villopoto and few others do the most fast laps in practice. Obviously, it’s working for him with how solid he’s riding. He knows the track by heart and has it dialed by time he gets to the Main Event.”

RICKY (CARMICHAEL) HAS TALKED ABOUT YOU BEING MORE AGGRESSIVE IN PASSING SITUATIONS. HOW DO YOU BALANCE BEING AGGRESSIVE WITH THE ONE-LINED RACE TRACKS THAT YOU’VE BEEN RACING ON? “It’s just pick a spot and get the pass as fast as you can. That’s what Ricky (Carmichael) has been working with me on. Once I get to somebody, pass them. Don’t sit there and follow them around the track and get stuck in their pass. Make the pass and go pick off the next guy.”

TALK ABOUT DAYTONA AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO RACE AT THE HISTORIC ‘WORLD CENTER OF RACING’: “It’s really cool to race at Daytona. The track is so much different than we’re use to riding because it’s a combination of an outdoor and indoor style layout. The dirt is soft and usually bumpy. It can get rutted up if we have some rain. I love riding the outdoor series and Daytona is the closest thing that we have to it.”

RICKY (CARMICHAEL) IS HOSTING THE TEAM AT HIS TRACK IN TALLAHASSEE THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT FOR YOUR DEVELOPMENT AS A RIDER? “It’s really cool. To have the chance to spend hours on a bike with RC watching over you is priceless. He knows so much about how to ride these bikes that you just try and absorb his knowledge and apply it to your ride. He’ll ride with us and pushes us to get better on and off the bike. I’m not sure words can describe how fortunate we are to have a living legend in our camp doing whatever it takes to make our racing better.”
