2013 Las Vegas: NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-up & Race Preview

Today, is round three of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup series season. The Cup series has been coming to Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1998. With a near sell-out expected, the grandstands should be hosting over 137,000 NASCAR fans.
The 1.5-mile (2.41 km) track is a D-shaped asphalt oval with 20 degree banking each end, and 9 degree banking on the backstretch, and a parallel 9 degree banking on the front-stretch. The front-stretch is 2,275 feet or roughly 700 longer than the backside.
The first Cup event in 1998 was won by Mark Martin in a Ford. But Martin has never won the event since despite having six top-5s, and ten top-10s in 15 attempts.
Far and away, the driver the most wins on the lucky oval is 5-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson. But its all or nothing for Johnson at this track. His four wins - 10 tries - came in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010. But five times out of 10 attempts Johnson has finished outside the top ten including 2008 (29th), 2009 (24th), and 2011 (16th). Last year, Johnson grabbed second.
The other two big winners in Vegas have been Jeff Burton (wins in 1999, 2000) and Matt Kenseth (wins in 2003, 2004). However, neither driver has won recently, though Burton finished third in 2009 and fifth in 2008, and Kenseth grabbed a fifth in 2010. Neither driver finished in the top-ten in 2011 or 2012.
So who is going to win today ?
The Vegas book-makers have once again chosen Jimmie Johnson. But as the stats illustrate, its all or nothing for Johnson at Vegas.
Can Johnson break out for his second win of the 2013 season ? We'd put money on it.
But, keep an eye on Carl Edwards who won the 2011 affair, which was his second win in four years. And keep your other eye on previous winners Tony Stewart (2012), and Kyle Busch (2009). Including Johnson, those three drivers have won every race at Las Vegas since 2005.
Today, should be another exciting race, so enjoy! Because if the winner isn't Johnson, Edwards, Stewart, or Busch, the name will likely surprise us all!
