Mazda6 Celebrity Challenge Drivers Ready To Race At The 2013 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix

The Mazda6 Celebrity Challenge drivers completed their training at Sandown Raceway today in spectacular fashion and are now licensed and ready to race at the 2013 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix.

The group spent the morning finalising their practical exercises including red flag testing on the track, before taking part in two mock races in the afternoon.

It didn't take long for the red flag to emerge with Chris Tarrant and Jonathan LaPaglia coming together very slightly on the very first corner. With adrenaline high, Hamish MacDonald and Wayne Cooper were involved in a similar incident, but this was quickly surpassed by MacDonald's failure to stay on the track when entering one of Sandown's notorious chicanes.

Gender rivalry in the group was high on day three with the men's and women's fields split. Scott McGregor, Sir Chris Hoy and Brad Hodge set the early pace, with Anna Meares, Vanessa Amarosi and Kate Peck also firing a warning shot off to the rest of the field with similar standout performances.

"Hopefully I'll be able to implement some of the skills we have learnt over the past three days at Albert Park as it's a completely different track," said Peck. "It'll be a bit of luck, but hopefully something has sunk in!"

In the final hours of today's session the 21 drivers completed an Observed Driving Test to obtain their CAMS licence, with each celebrity driver passing with flying colours.

The group will be presented with their licenses tomorrow morning, fit and ready to compete in tomorrow's Qualifying with motorsport legend Mark Skaife's words of encouragement and support carrying the group through to Sunday.

The Mazda6 Celebrity Challenge will feature 21 vehicles and bring together celebrities from a wide variety of backgrounds and disciplines to compete at Melbourne's Albert Park street circuit during the 2013 Formula 1® Rolex Australian Grand Prix.

Vision and interviews from today's driver training can be accessed here.
