Born in South Africa, Raoul’s career began when he was invited to a karting academy at Bedford Autodrome by Jonathan Palmer back in August 2007. His impressive performance prompted his entry into the South African Rotax Mini Max Championship in 2008, where he ended the season as top rookie. The following year he secured the National Mini Max title together with various club championships and two victor ludorums.
In 2011 he moved to the UK, competing in the British Super 1 National Championship and claiming top rookie. He remained in the category for 2012 where he finished third overall and capped off his year by representing Team GB at the Rotax Grand Finals in Portugal.
Raoul recently took delivery of his new F4 car from the championship’s headquarters at Bedford Autodrome and is now looking forward to the challenge ahead.
“Just looking at the F4 car gets me excited - the pictures don’t do it justice!” said Raoul, 16, who studies at Elthorne Park High Sixth Form. “I had a brief opportunity to shake the car down and I was really impressed. It has a good balance and handles extremely well. The super-fast semi-automatic transmission is an adrenaline rush. I cannot wait to start testing.
“MSV is doing a great job promoting the series, and almost every week the profile seems to climb higher. I am really pleased that we made the decision to go down this route and to have secured a place on the grid.”
Raoul’s manager Dan Holland, from DHR Kart, added: “Raoul is a very special talent and is both fast and exciting to watch. Having managed him over the past two years I have no doubt that he will adapt to the main circuit, and slicks and wings quickly. I expect him to be quick out the blocks.”
