The Spirit Of Le Mans Comes To Silverstone

The Spirit of Le Mans is coming to Silverstone on 12 – 14 April, when the Northamptonshire circuit will host the opening round of the 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). The 6 Hours of Silverstone round of the series, which includes the renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, will be the UK’s biggest sportscar race of the year. Featuring 35 spectacular endurance supercars, the grid will include 21 Le Mans (LM) prototypes and 14 Grand Touring Endurance (GTE) entries, representing legendary marques such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Porsche, Nissan, Toyota and Audi.

Seven British teams and 15 British drivers, including BRDC SuperStar Alex Brundle, who made his debut in the series last year with his father Martin Brundle, former F1 drivers Anthony Davidson and Allan McNish and the all British line-up of Danny Watts, Nick Leventis and Jonny Kane with Strakka Racing, will take on the best endurance drivers from around the world, with Bruno Senna and Kamui Kobayashi of Formula 1 fame also adding to the impressive line-up on the grid.

WEC is one of the highlights of the British motor sport calendar and this season there is plenty to celebrate with Aston Martin’s 100th Anniversary and 90 years of the historic Le Mans race. Plus, the 108-year-old coveted Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy will be presented to the winners of the 6 Hours of Silverstone, marking the first time that the Club’s famous Trophy will go to the winners of a world championship endurance sportscar race for nearly 50 years. The prestigious Trophy, which has been won by some of the legends of British motor sport, including Sir Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Tony Brooks and Derek Bell, is the longest lasting trophy in motor sport.

Running on the world famous Grand Prix Circuit and hosted from The Wing paddock, the weekend of WEC has a host of on and off-track entertainment for all the family. The WEC paddock will be open to all ticket holders on Saturday and Sunday, while a free pit walk and autograph session will take place on the Sunday, bringing fans closer to the action and providing unprecedented access to the drivers.

Ahead of the WEC weekend, the ‘Best of the British’ will be gathering in Potters Field, London, on Friday 22 March, for an official pre-race photocall. Alex Brundle, Darren Turner, Nick Leventis, Jonny Kane, Danny Watts and French driver Stéphane Sarrazin will all be attending alongside a display of endurance cars from the championship, including Aston Martin Vantage V8 (LMGTE), Strakka’s Honda HPD ARX 03c (LMP1), Delta-ADR’s Nissan Oreca 03 (LMP2) and RAM Racing’s Ferrari 458 from the European Le Mans Series.
