2013 Australia GP: LIVE Formula One F1 Qualifying Update - Six KO'd! Rosberg, Mercedes Fastest!

By PaddockTalk.com Staff Writers

Formula F1 series Q1 qualifying session for the 2013 Australian Grand Prix on the streets of Melbourne, Austrlia got underway after a 30 minute delay. Nico Rosberg - Mercedes - was fastest with a lap of 1:43.380. He was just ahead of Fernando Alonso (Ferrari), and Romain Grosjean (Lotus).

All 22 cars have immediately took to the track.

Victims of their own aggression were Lewis Hamilton who spun and needed a push to return to the track, Giedo van der Garde for Caterham, and Felipe Massa who nosed into the wall requiring a front wing change. Massa has seemingly avoided suspension damage.

Mark Webber also spent time off track, as Sergio Perez spun wildly in his McLaren. Charles Pic and Esteban Gutierrez both spun late in the session losing their front wings.

In the end, Jules Bianchi, Max Chilton, Giedo van der Garde, Charles Pic, Esteban Gutierrez, Pastor Maldonado were knocked out in Q1.

Pirelli have brought their medium and supersoft tyres should drier conditions break through. Teams started on the full wet tyres, and some began gambling on the intermediates late in the session.
