NASCAR Number (Mar. 19, 2013)
By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service
2: The number of cars in the top 10 of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series owners’ standings that don’t have a corresponding presence in the top 10 of the drivers’ championship standings. The No. 55 Toyota of Michael Waltrip Racing is fourth in owner points, thanks to two drivers—Mark Martin for the first three races and Brian Vickers last Sunday at Bristol. The No. 51 Phoenix Racing Chevrolet is eighth in the owners’ standings after four races, the result of the efforts of three different drivers—Regan Smith, AJ Allmendinger and Austin Dillon. The presence of two cars that high in owner points raises the very real possibility that a car may qualify for the owners’ Chase for the Sprint Cup without having a driver eligible for the title. That hasn’t happened since the Chase format was adopted in 2004.
