The pair met co-hosts Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie and weatherman Al Roker in the heart of Times Square to promote diabetes awareness and discuss the IZOD IndyCar Series season opener. NBC was the first stop among several other NYC-based entities including: CNN, CNBC, Sports Illustrated, Men's Journal and the Wall Street Journal, where Franchitti and Kimball discussed the upcoming Race With Insulin United initiative through Chip Ganassi Racing Teams.

An Award-Winning Year: On top of being a full-time racecar driver, Kimball was acknowledged for two prestigious awards in 2012. He was recognized with a Jefferson Award, which is considered the “Nobel Prize” for community service, as well as the Tony Renna Rising Star Award that is presented each year to the IZOD IndyCar Series driver who displays exceptional driving prowess, physical fitness and resourcefulness.

Charlie Kimball and No. 83 Novo Nordisk Team

Let the Season Begin: In last year’s Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg season-opener, Kimball and the team started the year off right and matched the career-best finish of ninth they scored in the 2011 season at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Kimball’s St. Petersburg finish led to a rally of top-10 finishes in 2012, as he went on to score a career-best six top-10 finishes (St. Petersburg, Sao Paulo, Indianapolis, Belle Isle, Toronto and Fontana) and his first podium finish of second at Toronto.

Remember the Time: Last year, in round one of the IndyCar Series at St. Petersburg, Kimball gained a total of 13 positions. The most positions gained by any of the 26 drivers in the field that race.

Strong Start: Kimball and the team recently completed their IZOD IndyCar Series Open Test hosted by Barber Motorsports Park on March 12-13. All IZOD IndyCar Series teams tested on the 2.38-mile circuit in Birmingham, Ala. On the first day of the two-day test, eight different teams were represented in the top-10 and 19 of the 26 drivers were within one second of the leader. Twenty-five drivers were quicker than Will Power's official record on the 2.38-mile, 17-turn road course, including Kimball, who posted a 1:08.462 second practice time to finish 13th among 26 drivers. Recent surface grinding combined with a new compound for the Firestone primary tires developed for the track and cool temperatures for the turbo-charged engines were contributing factors to the record-breaking speeds on opening day. Charlie wrapped up the second day of competition by posting a best-time of 1:07.767 for the day to finish sixth. In combined results of the two-day test Kimball finished the within the top-10, placing eighth overall.

Kimball, on the Season-Opener: "I'm really excited to kick off the season in St. Pete with the Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing Team this weekend. The whole team has been working so hard over the winter. We had a pretty good test at Barber, making a lot of progress and developments both on the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen car itself and competition-wise. We had a strong start at St. Pete last year, with a top-10 finish, so I think with a whole year of data on the DW12 under our belts and a lot of prep over the offseason, we'll go into the season very strong."

Chip Ganassi has been a fixture in the auto racing industry for over 25 years and is considered one of the most successful as well as innovative owners the sport has anywhere in the world. Today his teams include three cars in the IZOD IndyCar Series, two cars in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and one Daytona Prototype in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series. Overall his teams have 15 championships and over 150 victories, including four Indianapolis 500s, a Daytona 500, a Brickyard 400 and five Rolex 24 At Daytonas. Ganassi boasts state-of-the-art race shop facilities in Indianapolis and Brownsburg, Ind. and Concord, N.C., with a corporate office in Pittsburgh, Penn.
