Toyota remains the title sponsor of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach – a position it has held since 1980 – and will continue to provide its Scion FR-S fleet and technical support for all training, press/practice day and race weekend activities. The GPALB will be responsible for organizational aspects of the event. The Pro/Celebrity Race is the longest-running, most prestigious celebrity race in the United States.
"We are grateful to Toyota for their continued relationship, which has so far spanned 37 years as title sponsor of the Pro/Celebrity Race and 39 years with the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach," said Jim Michaelian, president and CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach. "We are now creating an opportunity for another company to align itself with the most prominent celebrity race in the country and be a part of the excitement and fun that surrounds it every year."
Run each year on the streets of Long Beach, Calif. since 1977 the Pro/Celebrity Race is part of a six-race weekend in April and features celebrities from the fields of film, television, music and sports racing each other wheel-to-wheel in identically prepared Scion FR-S. Monies raised each year benefit “Racing for Kids,” a nonprofit, national fundraising program that supports children’s hospitals throughout the United States. The race is nationally televised with multiple repeat airings.
Over the years, Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race participants have included many Hollywood elites such as Keanu Reeves, Ashley Judd, Adrien Brody, Cameron Diaz, George Lucas, Queen Latifah and Jay Leno. Outside the red carpet, participants such as former astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, NFL star John Elway, NBA All-Star Karl Malone, X Games Champion Tony Hawk, Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton and twelve-time Olympic medalist Dara Torres have competed in the 10-lap charity event.
More than $2 million has been donated by Toyota to the Racing for Kids organization since 1991 on behalf of the Pro/Celebrity race and its participants.
The entitlement of the Pro/Celebrity race also includes, among other things, an opportunity to name a driver to compete in one of the cars in the race, as well as prominent branding on the cars and driver uniforms. In addition, the title sponsor will be a major sponsor of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend, and be able to entertain clients in one the Grand Prix’s luxurious Pit Row Suites.
The 2014 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach will take place April 11-13, 2014.
