Figge And Baldwin Move To The Front In The Pirelli World Challenge Practice Two From St Petersburg

Alex Figge, of Denver, Co., picked up the pace moving to the top of the time sheets in GT, while Jack Baldwin, of Marietta, Ga., holds onto the top position in GTS in practice session two for the Pirelli World Challenge St. Petersburg Sports Car Challenge Presented by StopTech. This Pirelli World Challenge event is supporting the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Figge, driving the No. 9 K-PAX Racing/Volvo S60, upped the ante, trimming a little more than 0.2 seconds off Ryan Dalziel’s fast lap from the morning session. Figge’s lap of 1:15.686 (85.616 mph) puts him in good shape for Friday’s late afternoon qualifying session.

“Obviously it’s nice to be on the pace, I think it’s a unique season,” Figge said. “I think a lot of people are playing games, and I don’t think it means anything. I think I was being caught by a few cars that were headed to the pits, so we’ll see what happens in qualifying and the race.

“It’s nice to have the Volvos running well. We’ve turned every lap, both Randy and I, we’ve had no mechanical issues whatsoever. That’s obviously a good place to be, and we’re just working on our race car.”

James Sofronas, of Villa Park, Calif., led the Global Motorsports Group contingency in session two. Sofronas, driving the No. 14 GMG/Mobil 1/Audi R8 LMS put down a lap of 1:15.743 (85.552 mph), to end up second in the session.

Johnny O’Connell, of Flowery Branch, Ga., bettered his time and position jumping up to third in session two. The driver of the No. 3 Cadillac Racing Cadillac CTS-V.R clocked a 1:15.852 (85.429 mph).

The No. 2 Hawk Performance/Chevrolet Corvette driven by Mike Skeen, of Charlotte, N.C., had another strong run. Skeen managed a time that was a tick better than the morning session with a 1:16.021 (85.239 mph).

Dalziel, of Windermere, Fla., was slower in this session compared to the morning session. His time of 1:16.088 (85.164 mph) landed the No. 46 Privacy Star/ENTRUST/Porsche 911 GT3 in fifth place, compared to the 1:15.904 (85.371 mph) from this morning.

Baldwin, was at the top of the time charts in the GTS class for both Friday practice sessions. Baldwin, driving the No. 73 Motul/StopTech/Invoice Prep/Porsche 911 GT3 bettered his session one time of 1:21.381 (79.625 mph), with a 1:20.467 (80.530 mph) in session two.

“We’ve had a lot of time to work on this car, and I have to give all the credit to Gold Crest Motorsports,” Baldwin said. “Along with the team at GTSport, all the guys and the hard work that has gone into the cars to get them prepared. Steve Ruiz, our engineer, has really dialed these in and that’s where the credit is due. We’re not doing it on the straightaways, we’re doing it with the handling of the car. They’re just doing a fantastic job.”

We expected to come down here and do good. We worked hard to put ourselves in that position.”

Andy Lee, of Colorado Springs, Co., made a huge improvement jumping up the charts, from the ninth position in GTS practice session one, to second in the GTS class. Lee drove the No. 20 Best IT/Chevrolet Camaro to a 1:20.746 (80.251 mph).

The No. 42 Acura/HPD/RealTime Racing/Acura TSX of Peter Cunningham, of Milwaukee, Wis., slotted in third in class with a 1:21.033 (79.967 mph) lap.

Swede Nic Jonsson was fourth in the GTS class. Jonsson turned a 1:21.678 (79.336 mph) in the No. 36 Kia Motors America/Kia Optima.

Ending up fifth in the session in GTS was Kevin Gleason, of Johnstown, Pa. While Gleason improved on his time from the morning session in his No. 16 Porsche Cayman S, turning a 1:21.841 (79.178 mph), but dropped two positions on the speed in the afternoon.

Qualifying for Round One of the Pirelli World Challenge Championships takes place Friday at 5:10 pm (EDT). Race One rolls off March 23 at 5:00 pm (EDT).
