2013 California (Fontana): NASCAR Sprint Cup Starting Line-up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The NASCAR Sprint Cup series has arrived at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California for round five of the 2013 season.

Auto Club (California) Speedway was built on the grounds of Kaiser Steel mill and opened in 1997. In all, the NASCAR Sprint Cup series has raced at the 2.0-mile D-shaped oval 22 times. The banking in the turns is less than half that of Daytona with 14 degrees in the turns. The front stretch is 11 degrees of banking with a mere three degree slant on the back stretch. To win at California, a driver will have to use the brake and the throttle.

Over the last four visits to the track, three drivers have dominated: 5-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart. Overall, Johnson and Harvick have one win and three top-five's apiece while Tony Stewart has two top-five's and both were wins.

So who will claim victory today ?

This is one of the toughest picks we've had in a while, but we are going to go with Tony Stewart since he's had the best results recently.

However, keep your eye on Johnson who is far and away the most solid long-term trend at California, even though he didn't win the last three visits to Fontana. In 2010, Johnson finished third (Fall, 2010), in 2011 he was second, but in 2012 he was well back in 10th.

As for other contenders, the aforementioned Kevin Harvick is a solid choice, and Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth have had their share of solid finishes at California.

So enjoy today's NASCAR Sprint Cup race!
