2013 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals Event Preview

Spencer Massey wants the April showers that bring May flowers to be nothing other than showers of Mello Yello in the winner's circle at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend.

Massey won last year's spring event and also has a Wally trophy from the fall event in 2009 at the Las Vegas dragstrip.

"When you go back to an event that you've won, it gives you more confidence because it's in your mind that you've done it before so you can do it again," Massey said.

"Winning at Vegas is fun," he said. "I've won there twice with my Top Fuel dragster and there's no reason I can't get a third trophy from there. It's just one of those places where we've just performed well and I want to keep that up."

After a first round loss to start the 2013 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing season, Massey and the Battery Extender powered by Schumacher team led by crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler have been to semifinal rounds at Phoenix and Gainesville, Fla.

"We went to the semifinals two out of the first three races so now we just need to get by that round and get to a final. I think the car is starting to come around and respond to what Phil and Todd tell it to do.

"We got on a hot streak about this time last season and all signs are pointing in the direction that we can do that again this year. I don't want to jinx us, but we didn't smoke the tires once in seven runs at Gainesville and that's not easy to do. I'm just anxious to see if we can keep that streak going because that's a pretty cool thing to be able to say."

Massey and several Don Schumacher Racing and other NHRA drivers will kick off the weekend with the NHRA Fan Fest at DSR's home in Las Vegas, the New York-New York Hotel and Casino. The Fan Fest is scheduled for Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Staten Island Room in the Sporting House Bar & Grill.

"The fan fest in Vegas is always huge and it's so cool to see so many fans come out and support us," Massey said. "The New York-New York Hotel & Casino has come to be a second home for everyone at DSR and we love hanging out there."

The following are Massey's statistics and other event notes for the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at Las Vegas:
