Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing Advance Notes - Barber Motorsports Park

Chip Ganassi Racing Teams, Unite: Chip Ganassi Racing Teams and Novo Nordisk are supporting Charlie Kimball in a ‘Race With Insulin Unites’ campaign by uniting teammates from NASCAR, INDYCAR and GRAND-AM Series to promote diabetes awareness. For the weekend of April 5-7 Kimball will sport his Race With Insulin paint scheme at Barber Motorsports Park, while NASCAR teammate Jamie McMurray will have a similar Race With Insulin paint-scheme at the NASCAR Spring Cup Series (NSCS) race in Martinsville. That same weekend, all fellow Chip Ganassi Racing teammate’s cars in INDYCAR, NASCAR and GRAND-AM will race with exclusive blue wheels to simulate the blue circle that is the global symbol for the International Diabetes Federation.

NBC Sports Network TV Ratings Are Up: The Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg delivered a 0.26 HH rating, up 53-percent vs. last year (0.17) and the best for an INDYCAR season-opener on NBC Sports Network (since 2009). The race delivered 388,000 viewers, a 78-percent increase vs. last year’s season opener (218,000). It was also the second-best season-opener for NBC Sports Network’s INDYCAR coverage (since 2009) behind only the 2010 race from Sao Paulo, Brazil (410,000). In the advertiser-coveted P18-49 demo, the race delivered 126,000 viewers, up 91% vs. last year (66,000).

Track Facts: Brad Goldberg, engineer of the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen Honda, sheds some light on what makes Barber Motorsports Park unique to an IZOD IndyCar Series team…“At Barber Motorsports Park, we pull close to 4 G’s in turns 10 and 11 of the track. Ironically, in turn one at Barber we are over 4 G’s, which is the highest acceleration area. I keep saying the coolest thing to do would be put a grandstand or have fans stand just off the apex of turn one because it’s a great corner. The other cool thing about turns 10 and 11 is with the nature of the track and the sharp-incline you pull nearly 4 G’s laterally, but at the same time, 4 G’s vertically. Barber also has a high-speed chicane on the back-straight we have over a 5G shift (i.e. +2.5G’s to -2.5G’s) in under .5 seconds. Let’s assume you weight 100lbs, which means your body would have 250lbs pushing you the right, then in half-second you would go from 250 on the right to 250 on the left. In turn 10 and turn 11, it’s an 8 G swing in 1 second. Imagine that! Speaking of roller coasters…”

Honda-Powered Weekend: This weekend’s Honda Grand Prix of Alabama will be the fourth IZOD IndyCar Series event at the Barber Motorsports Park circuit, and the third year American Honda has served as title sponsor of the event. American Honda also sponsored last month’s season-opening Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg; and will again be the title sponsor of the Honda Indy 200 in August at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. In addition to these three events, Honda Canada entitles the Honda Indy Toronto.

Barber Will Mark Dallara’s 200th INDYCAR Win: INDYCAR Chassis manufacturer Dallara will win its 200th IZOD IndyCar Series race in Barber this weekend.

Charlie Kimball and No. 83 Novo Nordisk Team

In the Off-Weekend: “CK” spent the off-week in his hometown of Camarillo, California, with family and friends. He wrapped-up the weekend by spending time outdoors and taking the time to complete lawn and garden projects.

Sweet Home Alabama: Kimball scored his first IZOD IndyCar Series top-10 at Barber Motorsports Park in his rookie season of 2011.

Last Time at Barber: Kimball finished 25th in the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park. After a mechanical issue on lap 46 of the 90-lap race, the No.83 NovoLog FlexPen Honda retired from the event and took a 25th place finish on the 2.38-mile, 17-turn road course. The Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Team felt optimistic after making adjustments to improve the car in Saturday’s qualifying session and hoped to focus on race strategy for advancement in the first natural-terrain road course race of the season – but the effort was cut-short due to a mechanical problem with 44 laps to go.

Race Rewind: Kimball finished 12th at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on the streets of St. Petersburg. The Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing team started the race from 14th position and withstood a number of incidents that caused four cautions totaling 29 laps on the 1.8-mile street circuit. On lap 20, Kimball was nearly collected in a pile-up, so the team called him to pit lane for and fuel and to check on potential rear bumper damage. Under the third caution period, Kimball was directed from pit lane to go into fuel conservation mode. Coming out of the caution, Kimball detected a damaged front wing so he brought the car back to pit lane for a replacement. The No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen Honda would make its final pit stop on lap 74. Kimball fought for position in the final stages of the race to finish in 12th position.

Kimball, on Barber: “I’m really looking forward to getting back to Barber Motorsports Park. We had a pretty successful open test there, made some improvements to the car, and found a good direction. Coming off St. Pete, we were encouraged by the pace and performance of the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen car and I know that the Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing team is ready to take that momentum and build it into a really good result this weekend.”

Chip Ganassi has been a fixture in the auto racing industry for over 25 years and is considered one of the most successful as well as innovative owners the sport has anywhere in the world. Today his teams include three cars in the IZOD IndyCar Series, two cars in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and one Daytona Prototype in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series. Overall his teams have 15 championships and over 150 victories, including four Indianapolis 500s, a Daytona 500, a Brickyard 400 and five Rolex 24 At Daytonas. Ganassi boasts state-of-the-art race shop facilities in Indianapolis and Brownsburg, Ind. and Concord, N.C., with a corporate office in Pittsburgh, Penn.
