Marrakech, Free Practice: Narain Karthikeyan (Zele Racing) Goes To Front

The new Auto GP car already proved faster than its predecessor at Marrakech, in the practice session for round 2 of the 2013 season.

In only one appearance at the Moroccan course, despite the track's condition which was not ideal both in terms of grip and temperature due to yesterday's rain, Indian Narain Karthikeyan (Zele Racing) clocked a personal best lap of 1'29"271, beating the previous record set by Sergey Sirotkin in qualifying last year. The result confirmed the success of the brand-new project by Enzo Coloni, as the car kept reaching high performance levels despite the reduced running costs. Karthikeyan, coming from Formula 1, quickly got in touch with the Auto GP car which proved, in his words, "tough to race, demanding and very selective". After having a tough time in Monza, Karthikeyan is looking forward to qualifying... "we're definitely going to aim at the front row, we have a good car and both my team-mate and I can be fast".

Sergio Campana took in second for Ibiza Racing Team. The winner of Race 1 at Monza ended up 669 thousands of a second off the lead although a yellow flag condition prevented several drivers from improving their times. So the Auto GP car also showed plenty of room for further improvement. Rookie Meindert van Buuren (MP Motorsport) scored the third fastest lap at his first time of a temporary street circuit. He didn't back down though and managed to find good chemistry with the car becoming one of the favourites for the upcoming qualifications. Robert Visoiu (Ghinzani Motorsport) took 4th in front of Riccardo Agostini (MP Motorsport) and Luciano Bacheta (Zele Racing).

After having missed the first round of the season at Monza due to the contemporary commitment in the GP2 Series at Sepang, Daniel De Jong (MP Motorsport) was back to Auto GP by ending up in 7th to top Russian Max Snegirev (Virtuosi UK), championship leader Kimiya Sato (Euronova Racing) and Giuseppe Cipriani (Ibiza Racing Team).
