2013 Barber Park: IndyCar Starting Line-Up & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

Round two of the 2013 Izod Indycar season kicks off today with the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama presented by Legacy at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. The circuit is a 17-turn, 2.38-mile road course. The winner driver will take the checkers after completing 90 laps/214.2 miles.

This is the fourth IndyCar race at the track which debuted in 2010 with Helio Castroneves taking the victory by a half second over Scott Dixon.

2012 IndyCar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay took his first Pole of the 2013 season with a lap of 1:07.0871 (which was nearly three seconds quicker than last year's record) and is looking for his first win of the season after a dreadful 18th place finish at St. Pete with a throttle issue.

Pole sitters have won once in three tries at Barber Park.

Also starting on the front row will be Will Power who won from a ninth place starting position in 2012, and also won the 2011 event. Penske Racing is the only team to have won an IndyCar race at Barber Park.

Tristan Vautier will start third with Ganassi veteran Scott Dixon filling out row two.

In 2011 and 2010 the IndyCar series only had three winners (each season) from outside the top-four starting positions. However in 2012, that all changed with the new Dallara and engine competition with 10 of 15 winners starting 5th or worse. So today's race victory could go to anyone.

As for today's winner, we are going to go with.... Will Power. He led laps at St. Pete, and he's driving for Team Penske with a pretty quick car. Not to mention, this track suits him well.

Should Power fail, we'd say keep on eye Helio Castroneves who finished second at St. Pete, and Pole sitter Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Enjoy today's race, and look for the wheels of fate to keep it interesting. The 2013 IndyCar season is off to a solid start and should be a thrilling battle for the championship.
