2013 NHRA: Jack Beckman NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 3

2013 NHRA: Jack Beckman NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 3

Jack Beckman and the MTS Mail for Wounded Warriors Funny Car team qualified No. 3 for Sunday's championship eliminations in the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

And neither Beckman nor crew chief Todd Smith were satisfied even though their time of 4.095 seconds was second best in the heat of the fourth and final session that produced their Dodge Charger R/T's best run of the weekend.

That attitude showcases the mantra that helped the team rally to win the 2012 NHRA Funny Car world championship.

"That last run could have been much better," Beckman said. "We could have been more assertive. But it's hard to complain about a car that jumped up to the No. 3 spot."

After winning three event titles in the second half of 2012, Beckman lost in the first round of this year's first two events before advancing to the semifinals three weeks ago at Gainesville, Fla., where he lost to DSR teammate and eventual event winner Johnny Gray.

"Before we got here I did some interviews and said I couldn't promise we'd be back in championship form when we got to Las Vegas," Beckman said. "But all I could promise was that we were working intelligently at seeking out the resources of the other crew chiefs at Don Schumacher Racing.

"Our goal is simple: We want to have a winning Funny Car, and we're not letting our egos get in the way of achieving that.

"We got slightly off course trying to make last year's car even better, and we will end up with a better car. Right now it's frustrating because we have a less predictable, consistent Funny Car.

"Now we're looking for consistency before we try to pick away at it and make it a faster car than last year.

"No matter how well we run here Sunday, we're going to stay Monday and test."
