2013 NHRA: Shane Gray And Gray Motorsports Team Earn Top-Half Start In Vegas

At this weekend's SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, second-generation Pro Stock driver Shane Gray is back where he belongs – preparing for a raceday start from the top half of the field.

The Denver, N.C.-based Gray Motorsports driver began his career in the exceptionally competitive Pro Stock category in 2010 and experienced immediate success as a regular top-half qualifier and scored the first national event win of his career at the season-closer in Pomona. The early taste of victory left Gray with a constant thirst for more, and lately, that thirst has not been quenched.

The first three events of the 2013 Mello Yello Drag Racing season did not produce the aimed-for results, but a strong test session just prior to the SummitRacing.com Nationals gave hint to the power nestled beneath the hood of the sleek Gray Motorsports Chevy Camaro, and during qualifying in Las Vegas, Gray clocked a quick 6.685-second time for a start from the No. 7 position. It is the first top-half qualifying effort for Gray since the first race of the season in 2012 and his best qualifying position since the 2011 event in Chicago, where he started fourth.

"We have a lot of positive things going on in our camp right now," said Gray. "We have good power, but we're still missing the consistency, and I definitely need to get my mindset different. I feel like I have a chance on raceday now, and that's a great feeling. Hopefully, that confidence will help me get my driving back to where it needs to be."

According to crew chief Justin Elkes, the Gray Motorsports team continued to make progress throughout qualifying and responded well to changes made along the way. Gray intends to bring the total package to the table on Sunday as he lines up next to young Vincent Nobile in the first round of eliminations. The last time the two met on Sunday was in the second round at the first race this season, when Nobile got the win light. This time, however, Gray is planning for a different outcome.

"I really feel like I have a chance at running at Vincent tomorrow," said Gray. "If I can do my job and the car runs like it's clearly capable of running, then we have a chance. You couldn't ask for anything more than that."

The first round of eliminations at the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is scheduled for 11am.
