2013 NHRA: Bernstein's Long-Shot Try Falls Short In Las Vegas

Brandon Bernstein and the ProtectTheHarvest.com/MAVTV Top Fuel dragster fought a car that didn't want to make it through the first 60 feet of racetrack without the rear tires shaking and smoking.

On Sunday, Bernstein and his team were able to solve the early shake issue in the first round of the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals but weren't able to come up with the flawless run they needed to beat Antron Brown in the first round of eliminations at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"Bottom line, it was just an off weekend for our ProtectTheHarvest.com car," Bernstein said. "Like I said at the beginning, we knew we might struggle because we've been working on a lot of new stuff."

Brown got the advantage at the start but Bernstein was strong in the area that gave them fits all weekend because the cars were dead even at the 60-foot marker. Between the 60 and the 330 cones, the tires on the ProtectTheHarvest.com car broke traction and Brown plowed ahead for the victory.

"It showed promise on that last run," Bernstein said. "It didn't shake that time and went right through the zone. It picked up the 60-foot time, which we didn't have all weekend. We're going in the right direction."

Brown crossed the finish line in 3.811 seconds at 321.81 mph. Bernstein crossed the line in 5.205 seconds at 134.56 mph.

Crew chief Joe Barlam said that because of its altitude and air, The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is always a tricky place to find proper power.

"The power level in the engine was a problem with this altitude," Barlam said. "It's something a lot of people struggled with. We finally got the thing to the proper power level and it drove out there before getting loose. I just wish it was in Q1 instead of E1."

Bernstein said the team is determined to solve the problems and come out the other side stronger than ever.

"That happens sometimes at races," Bernstein said. "You get in a situation where you get behind the eight ball and you never really catch up to it. We're learning and it's going to come to us. It's not something we're going to going to give up on, that's for sure."

Up next for Bernstein and the ProtectTheHarvest.com/MAVTV team is the Dollar General NHRA Four-Wide Nationals on April 19-21 in Charlotte.
