Marino Franchitti Raises His Racing To Another Level

NEW dad Marino Franchitti has another reason to celebrate — after clinching a dream deal to race in the American Le Mans Series.

The Bathgate ace is back with LMP2 champs Level 5 Motorsports — starting at Long Beach in California this Saturday.
Franchitti — whose wife Holly gave birth to Luca last month — helped the team to a victory in the opening ALMS round at Sebring in Florida.

Now he will team up with Scott Tucker and Aussie IndyCar ace Ryan Briscoe for the rest of the series.
He said: “To be able to compete in the full championship with Level 5 in the HPD Honda, a car I know so well, is a dream come true, especially in the final year of the ALMS.”

Franchitti last drove a full ALMS season in 2009 — in the Dyson Racing Mazda. He ended up second in the LMP2 rankings.
Now the focus will be on helping the team to win the final LMP2 championship in the ALMS before it becomes United SportsCar Racing in 2014.

Franchitti added: “It’s a pleasure to be driving with Scott and Ryan, we worked so well together at Sebring and we’ll be pushing hard to continue to get results like that, and for the ultimate goal of Scott becoming ALMS champion once again.”
The deal will also give Franchitti a return ticket to the Le Mans 24 Hour race in June.

Last year he played a major role in developing the “Batmobile” — the Nissan Deltawing.

But, despite leading the testing programme in the revolutionary car, it crashed before he got a stint in the 24-hour race.
He added: “I couldn’t have wished for more, being back in the same car with Scott and Ryan at the Le Mans 24 Hours just rounds out the perfect season.

“I could talk about it for ages, but I don’t want to look too far ahead at the moment. We have a big job to do this weekend and that’s my focus right now.”
