Wayne Taylor Racing: Visual Studio Ultimate Grand Prix Of Atlanta Qualifying Report - Max Angelelli & Jordan Taylor

The No. 10 Velocity Worldwide Corvette Dallara DP of Wayne Taylor Racing will start Saturday’s inaugural GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series Visual Studio Ultimate Grand Prix of Atlanta from the inside of the second row after qualifying Friday at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga., was rained out and the starting grid was set according to the current team point standings, per the GRAND-AM rulebook.

Jordan Taylor, 21-year-old co-driver with veteran Max “The Ax” Angelelli with whom he scored the Velocity Worldwide team’s first Rolex Series victory of the season two weekends ago at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala., will roll off third when the green flag flies for Saturday two-hour, 45-minute race around the 2.54-mile, 12-turn Road Atlanta circuit. The championship-leading No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates BMW Riley of Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas will start from the pole while the No. 99 Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP of Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty will occupy the outside-front-row starting spot by virtue of its second position in the team standings.

“I think third is a good spot,” said Taylor, who has two career GT-class victories to go with the first career Daytona Prototype-class win he registered at Barber. “The field is really tight, so qualifying would have been difficult. I think we had a decent car for qualifying, but we’ve been working mostly on our racecar and I think we’ll have a good car, similar to COTA (Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas), where we were strong in the race – maybe not as strong as for qualifying. Starting third behind Rojas and Fogarty, they’re always difficult to race against but they always race clean. So I’m looking forward to a good race and hopefully we’ll leave here with some really good points. I think everyone’s in a similar boat after rain washed out afternoon practice and qualifying. It took everyone a few laps to get up to speed yesterday in testing since it was the first time on this track with these cars. I think we’ve all adapted pretty well and the times are all extremely close. The top-10 cars were within six or seven tenths (of a second) of each other in practice this morning. That’ll make for an exciting race. Another factor will be the GT traffic playing into the DP race. If some people are getting into traffic and some people aren’t, that’ll kind of separate our pack a little bit.”

The top-five on the starting grid for Saturday’s Visual Studio Ultimate Grand Prix of Atlanta are:

1. Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (No. 01 BMW Riley) with Memo Rojas and Scott Pruett (93 points).

2. Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing (No. 99 Corvette DP) with Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney (91 points).

3. Wayne Taylor Racing (No. 10 Corvette DP) with Jordan Taylor and Max Angelelli (88 points).

4. Starworks with Alex Popow (No. 2 Ford Riley) with Ryan Dalziel and Alex Popow (79 points).

5. Spirit of Daytona Racing (No. 90 Corvette DP) with Richard Westbrook and Ricky Taylor (76 points).

Race time is 4:30 p.m. EDT Saturday with SPEED providing the live television broadcast. Live radio on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 90 begins with pre-race festivities at 4:15 p.m.
