Michael Shank Racing Fast In Practice Before Rain Washes Out Qualifying

Michael Shank Racing's two Ford-Riley Daytona Prototypes will start Saturday’s Visual Studio Ultimate Grand Prix of Atlanta from ninth (No. 6) and 13th (No. 60) on the grid after Friday’s qualifying session was cancelled due to rainy weather. GRAND-AM set the grid based on championship point order.

The announcement was received with disappointment by the team, which was hoping to get the chance to show their speed in the qualifying session after both cars posted strong lap times in the earlier practice sessions. The No. 60 Ford-Riley is shared by Michael Valiante and John Pew and the No. 6 is piloted by Gustavo Yacaman and Antonio Pizzonia.

With GRAND-AM staging a debut race at the legendary Georgia track, Michael Shank Racing was immediately quick at the 2.54-mile road course with Valiante posting the quickest time in the second practice during Thursday’s test day and Pizzonia fourth in the session - just half a tenth off the fast time.

“I know that the rules have us not qualifying in these conditions, but you do wish we could have gone out and seen where we stacked up today,” said team owner Mike Shank. “But I’m happy with how we’ve rolled off the truck this weekend and we know we have two strong race cars. Hopefully we have good weather and can put on a great show for a new audience and earn some new GRAND-AM fans. I know the guys are going to have to be VERY patient in traffic and hopefully we can come out of the weekend with two strong finishes."

The Visual Studio Ultimate Grand Prix of Atlanta begins Saturday at 4:30 PM (ET) and will be televised live on SPEED.
