2013 Long Beach: IndyCar Starting Line-up, Grid & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The Izod IndyCar series is on the streets of Long Beach, California this weekend for the longest running annual street event in the United States - the 2013 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

The Long Beach street circuit is a 1.968-mile, 12-turn event that surrounds the Long Beach Convention Center and races down historic Shoreline Drive. The surface can be a bit tricky with asphalt, and concrete sections which change braking and acceleration opportunities for drivers.

Mario Andretti won the first CART race back in 1984 in a Lola/Cosworth with an average speed of 82.898 mph. The winners came in streaks over the years with Al Unser Jr winning six times, Paul Tracy four times, and Mario Andretti & Sebastian Bourdais each winning three times.

With the arrival of the IndyCar series, that has changed with four different winners in five events with no driver winning from Pole in those races. The only driver to have won twice in that span is defending race winner Will Power.

But one stat has been true no matter which type of car has driven here, only one driver has won from further back than fourth since Michael Andretti started 15th in 2002 - Will Power (2012). In fact the winner has started fourth or better 23 times in 29 races.

Its a tough track to move forward on.

Today, Dario Franchitti will start this Grand Prix from Pole with Ryan Hunter-Reay at his side. Just behind Will Power and Takuma Sato make up row two.

Our pick for the win today will go to Ryan Hunter-Reay. The second starting position has won this event eight times, and Hunter-Reay has made some outstanding passes to take wins on tight street circuits over the years.

If that should fail, keep an eye on Power who hasn't won yet this season, and is always a threat on road and street courses.

So enjoy! And be sure to check out round three of the 2013 IndyCar season, the Toyota Grand Prix.
