Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing produced its second consecutive top-10 qualifying performance for the season, starting the race from ninth position in the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen Honda. Kimball showed strength early-on and advanced to eighth-position within the first lap of the 80-lap race. On lap 7, the No. 83 used push-to-pass on a restart and battled its way to sixth. Kimball would hold this position for 20 laps until coming in for his first pit stop of the race for primary tires and a splash of fuel. On lap 30, the No. 83 and No. 98 made contact in the Turn 8 tire barrier, causing Kimball to pit for a new wing. As a result the team returned to the race one lap down. On lap 56, The No. 83 would make contact with tire barrier in Turn 1, which sent Kimball to the pits for a second time for a new nose and rear bumper, which dropped them to 21st. The No. 83 would eventually cross the finish-line in 21st position, two laps down.

With the result, Kimball is now 11th in the IZOD IndyCar Series point standings with 60 markers, -39 points behind leader Helio Castroneves.

Honda is second in the manufacturer point standings with 21 points, trailing Chevrolet with 24.

Up next, Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing will compete in the Sao Paulo Indy 300 Beach in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Sunday, May, 5 (11:00am ET, NBC Sports Network).

NNCGR Quoteboard

Charlie Kimball: “It was a little disappointing result but there were a lot of positives. The No. 83 team did a great job in pit lane. We ran up front. We had the speed and the pace to run consistently up front. We’re looking forward to taking what we learned this weekend to the Texas test and Brazil. We have a good pit lane position from qualifying for Brazil. From here, we’ll go back to qualifying consistently and staying up front.”
