Richmond: A Perfect Opportunity To Shine For Matt Tifft And Win-Tron Racing

Following a respectable 16th place finish in the most recent NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (NKPSE) event at Five Flags (Fla.) Speedway two weeks ago, rookie Matt Tifft and his Win-Tron Racing team are encouraged and anxious to arrive at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, site of Thursday night’s Blue Ox 100.

After a rough go at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway and Greenville-Pickens (S.C.) Speedway respectively, the teenager qualified 14th in the Sunshine State and ran competitively during the 150-lap event acquiring crucial track time in his No. 89 DOC 360 Chevrolet Impala.

While the finish wasn’t exactly what the driver and Mooresville, North Carolina-based team had hoped for, the freshman team knows they must start somewhere and use that as motivation to build on their program to produce more favorable finishes for their young driver.

The fourth race of the season from the 0.75-mile paved “D” shaped-oval and dubbed as “America’s Premier Short Track” will serve as a double-header providing action for not only the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East division, but also the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown, a charitable late model event featuring a plethora of drivers from all aspects.

Knowing a strong crowd featuring fans, drivers and owners will be attendance for the Blue Ox 100, the incentive to do well Thursday night is at an all-time high.

“Richmond is a big deal,” said Tifft, the 2012 ARCA Midwest Tour Series rookie of the year. “We had a respectable finish at Five Flags a couple weeks ago, but we’re eager for more. This race garnishes a lot of attention for all the right reasons and it’s an impulse for us to go to Richmond and see what we can put together.”

Despite his inexperience with Richmond, Tifft isn’t seeing that as an obstacle.

“That’s nothing new,” he lightly chuckled. “Being a rookie on any tour, you’re going to experience things you’ve never seen before, including visiting new tracks. Luckily for me, I have a great team behind me in Win-Tron Racing. I know together we all want the same thing, strong results. We’re going to give it our all this week and hope it will give us some momentum to take into the month break.”

For Win-Tron Racing, owned by former racers Kevin Cywinski and Nate Thiesse, the expansion to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East tour opens the door for the team to continue and enhance their on-track product. The team will work vigorously with Tifft as part of their driver development platform. Currently, the team is tied for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards championship points lead with driver Mason Mingus after two races.

“After Pensacola, the team is upbeat and moving forward with full steam,” said Thiesse. “We learned a lot together that not only helped us there, but will also help us towards the rest of the year. Matt is showing he can adapt to these K&N cars quickly and we know that with a little luck, we’ll start producing the consistent top-10 finishes we know that we’re capable of. Hopefully, Richmond will start that trend.”

The Blue Ox 100 (75 miles / 100 laps) is set for Thursday, April 25 from the 0.75-mile oval. The 100-lap feature will lift off shortly after 7:00 p.m. The race will be tape-delayed on SPEED with an air date of Thursday, May 16 at 3:00 p.m. (Eastern).
