2013 NHRA: Shane Gray Confident As Series Returns To Houston

Fresh off of a solid outing in Charlotte one week ago, Pro Stock competitor Shane Gray is eager to slide back into the driver's seat of his Gray Motorsports Chevy Camaro and battle for the title at this weekend's O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals, the sixth race of 24 in NHRA's Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

In Charlotte, Gray earned a start from the No. 3 position – his best raceday start in nearly two years – and drove his way to the final round at the unique four-wide event. The weekend-long display of progress included re-setting his career best in terms of time and speed with a remarkable 6.497-second blast in the quarter-mile at 213.33 mph. The positive outcome was a direct result of a program that has been coming together slowly but surely since the start of the season.

"We joined forces with Elite Performance over the winter to grow our Gray Motorsports engine program, and we knew it would be a process to see things really come together," said Gray. "Slowly but surely, we're seeing it. I think what we were able to accomplish in Charlotte was a good example of that."

With the round wins and bonus points earned during qualifying, Gray moved up to 9th in the Mello Yello Series standings.

Last year in Houston, Gray had trouble during qualifying and was on the outside looking in until the final session, when he bumped into the field and was paired with eventual series champ Allen Johnson for the first round of eliminations.

"Last year, we just had a heck of a time at that racetrack," recalled Gray. "But we're ready for her this year. To be honest, I have one round win in Houston on my scorecard since I started racing Pro Stock there in 2010, and this weekend, I'm going to change that. We had another good test session after Charlotte last week, and I'm feeling more and more confident in our Gray Motorsports Camaro. We've put our hearts into this deal, and it's about time we felt the reward."
