New Qualifying Shoot-Out For Perth V8 Ute Round

A new qualifying format will be a major feature of Round 2 of the Auto One V8 Ute Racing Series – protected by ARMOR ALL at the Chill 360 at Barbagallo Raceway 3 – 5 May.

The new format, similar to the qualifying system used in Formula 1, features a 30 minute session broken up into 3 individual segments. Qualifying 1 will include all 32 V8 Utes and after 10 minutes, the top 20 fastest drivers will continue into Qualifying 2, for a shorter 7 minute session. The top 10 drivers from this session will then start Qualifying 3, a short 5 minute session allowing for a 1 or 2 lap shootout. The fastest lap times will then determine the top ten grid for the start of Race 1, with the balance of the grid filled as they drop off in lap time from each segment.

Kim “The Assassin” Jane will return to the field after a rebuild on the Bob Jane T Mart Holden, the result of an incident in Race 1 at the Clipsal 500. The Barbagallo Round defender and current lap record holder is looking forward to reclaiming the ARMOR ALL Pole Award in its new format.

“Perth’s a track that is unbelievably hard on tyres, it’s an abrasive track. We hope the ute is on the pace and can progress into Qualifying 3 without tearing up the tyres. A lot will be tactical; the fewer laps you can do in Qualifying, the better your tyres will be for racing.”

“We tested at Winton last Friday and focused on our set – up for Barbagallo and how to look after the tyres as much as we can. I’m not sure how it will transfer into speed until everyone is on track. I really like racing at Barbagallo and always do well. I even had success there in NASCAR in the 90’s,” said Jane.

Current leader of the ENZED Drivers Championship, Nathan Pretty, claimed third overall last year behind reigning champ Ryal Harris in second. He sits on 133 points only 19 points ahead of Jesus Racing’s Andrew Fisher in second and local Rhys McNally on 113 points in third.

McNally will be joined by another seven local drivers competing at the event including: Richard Bloomfield, Rhett Noonan, Matt Nolan and the return of Glenn McNally and Allan Letcher. McNally was the 2008 Rookie of the Year and Letcher made television and V8 Ute history with his infamous 7 time roll-over through the Chase at the Bathurst 1000 event in 2009. Also joining the field for his debut is former Stealth Formula Ford driver Peter Major.

Perth Auto One Star Adam Marjoram will sport a brand new livery at the event, and is looking forward to taking to his home track for the second time in a V8 Ute (his first was last year in the Auto One Wildcard Entry).

“We’ve completely changed the look of the car, and added our latest partner Nova FM. I’m looking forward to racing and it will be good to be competing back at home again. Like every other round, I’ll be taking this as a learning experience. I’m feeling more confident than I did last year, but I’ve still only raced there 5 times, however I’m more excited to get back in front of a home-crowd,” said the 19 year old Rookie.

The V8 Utes will hit the track on Friday, 3 May for two practice sessions and the new Qualifying format; Race 3 will be televised LIVE on Sunday, 5th May as part of the coverage on Network Seven.
