2013 Spain GP (Jerez): MotoGP Starting Line-Up & Race Preview

Jorge Lorenzo is on pole for the second time this year and for the 27th time overall in the MotoGP class. On the 26 occasions he has previously started from pole in the MotoGP class, he has finished on the podium 24 times, finished fourth once and had one DNF - at Jerez in 2009.

In second place on the grid is Dani Pedrosa - his 15th successive front row start. Pedrosa has finished on the podium in all seven starts at Jerez in the MotoGP class, including a win in 2008.

Marc Marquez, who takes the final place on the front row, will be aiming to win at Jerez for the first time in his grand prix career and become the youngest-ever rider to win back-to-back races in the premier-class.

Cal Crutchlow heads the second row of the grid - the tenth race in succession he has qualified within the top five.

Valentino Rossi is in fifth place on the grid, which is his best qualifying result since the final race of 2010 at Valencia, when he was fourth fastest qualifier.

In the final place on the second row is Alvaro Bautista, which is his best qualifying result so far in 2013. Bautista has finished in the top eight at the last 11 MotoGP races.

The highest-placed Ducati rider on the grid and heading the third row is Nicky Hayden. Hayden's third place finish two years ago at Jerez is the last time he stood on a MotoGP podium.

Stefan Bradl has qualified in the middle of the third row, after being fifth on the grid at the last four successive races.

In ninth place on the grid is Andrea Dovizioso, which is his lowest grid position since the final race of 2010 at Valencia when he was also ninth-fastest qualifier.

Hector Barbera is in tenth place on the grid and is the top CRT rider for the first time this year.

Moto2

Esteve Rabat has qualified on pole for the first time in his grand prix career, in what is his 113th GP start. Rabat had his best ever Grand Prix result two weeks ago in Austin, when he finished second.

Championship-leader Scott Redding has qualified in second place on the grid. Redding finished fourth at Jerez last year after being 12th fastest in qualifying.

Third-fastest in qualifying, Takaaki Nakagami, has been on the front row at each of the first three races of the year. Nakagami finished fifth last year at Jerez - his best result of 2012.

Pol Espargaro, who heads the second row of the grid, has won twice in the last three years at Jerez - the 125cc race in 2010 and the Moto2 race last year - his first victory in the Moto2 class.

Jordi Torres is in fifth place on the grid, which equals his best-ever qualifying result from Aragon last yearr.

Xavier Simeon takes the final place on the second row, which is his best grid position since the German GP last year.

Moto3

Alex Rins is on pole for the second consecutive race, and for the second successive year at the Spanish Grand Prix. If Rins takes the race win in Jerez, he will become the fourth-youngest rider of alltime to take back-to-back GP wins, after Maverick Viñales, Marco Melandri and Marc Marquez.

Maverick Viñales retired from the 125c GP at Jerez in 2011 and last year he finished sixth after running off the track on the second lap. Jerez is one of just four current circuits used by the Moto3 class where Viñales has not been on the podium in GP racing.

In the final place on the front row is Luis Salom, who finished second last year at Jerez after qualifying down in 19th place on the grid.

Brad Binder heads the second row of the grid - his best qualifying result in GP racing. This is the best qualifying result by a South African rider in any class of grand prix racing since Mario Rademeyer was third on the grid in the 250cc class at Kyalami in 1985. In that same race he finished the race third - also the last occasion a South African rider was on the podium in grand prix racing.

In fifth place on the grid is Jack Miller, who had his best-ever dry-weather GP result in Texas two weeks ago when he finished sixth.

Niccolo Antonelli takes the final place on the second row - his best qualifying result since the Misano race last year.

In 21st place on the grid is Livio Loi, who at the age of 16 years 8 days old will be the youngest-ever Belgian to take part in a grand prix race, and the first to compete in the 125cc/Moto3 class since Lucio Pietroniro in 1989.
