2013 Darlington: Hal Martin NASCAR Nationwide Race Preview

Hal Martin and the crew of the TriStar Motorsports No.44 American Custom Yachts Toyota Camry team are preparing to travel to Darlington, SC to compete on a track that has been slated as "Too Tough To Tame". Known for it's ferocity, Darlington Raceway is notorious for high-speed racing on the egg-shaped 1.366-mile raceway. High speeds and tight corner exits will lend itself to excitement and close racing.

How are you preparing yourself for this upcoming race?

Hal stated, "I plan on doing what I do for all my races, watching video of past races at this track and talking with my TriStar Motorsports teammates, Eric McClure and Mike Bliss about the best way to handle the track. From what I've heard already, I'll have to keep in mind that I need to race the track as well as race my competitors."

You said you'll need to remember to "race the track" what does that mean?

Martin replied, "Race the track means that the track itself will be sort of another competitor I need to consider as I'm running the race. For example, at this track it's easy to hit the walls due to the speed you're carrying exiting the corners. Also, I'll have to keep in mind things like tire wear, and that the track is banked differently at both ends of the track."

What is your plan to defeat a track that has been slated "Too Tough to Tame"?

Martin stated "I'll have to stay focused and keep alert. I'll need to react to what my car is doing, listen to my spotter and crew chief, and drive the car the way it feels best on the track. I think the track has been called 'Too Tough to Tame' because people try to tame it and take control of the track. I don't plan on trying to tame this track, just as I wouldn't try to tame a wild horse. My key to success at this track won't be to try to tame the track, but to work with it, to respect it, and to enjoy the ride."

You have a new decal on your car this weekend, tell us about The Blue Ribbon Project.

"This week, I'm very excited to have the opportunity to pair with The Blue Ribbon Project to raise awareness, provide support, and change misconceptions about arthritis" Martin stated. "Many people think that arthritis is a disease that just effects older adults, but it's not true. Arthritis can and does effect anyone. It is indiscriminate of age, gender, and race. Arthritis can even effect parts of the body besides joints, like the eyes for example. My team and I are excited to be able to show our support for such an amazing cause. The blue ribbon project requests that everyone wear blue to show support on May 10th, I'll be wearing blue and I hope you will too."
