2013 NHRA: Jack Beckman NHRA Southern Nationals Results: Second Round

Reigning NHRA Funny Car world champion Jack Beckman knows his Valvoline/MTS Mail for Wounded Warriors team is going to be just fine and remains patient as it continues to improve.

Although his Dodge Charger R/T qualified fifth for the rain-delayed NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway and lost in the second round, Beckman knows crew chief Todd Smith and assistant Terry Snyder are on the right course.

"Now we've made it down the track three straight runs," Beckman said. "We made two on Friday in qualifying and in the first round Sunday we ran a 4.122. We hadn't done that this year.

"There's no reason to hang our heads."

Beckman was most disappointed that he was unable to win the Atlanta title while driving a special "Don Schumacher Hall of Fame Tribute" themed Dodge that honored the team owner's induction May 2 into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame at Talladega Superspeedway.

"That would have been such a memorable way for us to get our first win of the year," Beckman said.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series moves to Heartland Park Topeka next weekend for the Kansas Nationals where Beckman scored his first of three 2012 NHRA race titles against DSR teammate Ron Capps.

"We'll set our sights a little bit higher in Topeka where we got this team's first win last year," he said.

After rain wiped out the Southern Nationals last weekend, the Mello Yello Series returned to the track north of Atlanta for abbreviated qualifying with only two sessions on Friday to determine the top-16 for Saturday's championship.

The following are Beckman's results and other notes from the NHRA Southern Nationals:
