Butler University To Display 'Bulldog' Logo On 2003 Grad Ed Carpenter's Car In Indy 500

Ed Carpenter, the only team owner/driver in the IZOD IndyCar Series, will have his university’s support again when he takes the green flag at world’s most famous racing facility in the 97th running of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” on May 26.

Butler University, just eight miles from the legendary Speedway, announced the Butler Athletics logo will be displayed on Carpenter’s No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Chevrolet IndyCar in the May 26 500-Mile Race.

In a presentation Wednesday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Carpenter was joined by Butler president James Danko, athletic director Barry Collier, associate athletic director Michael Freeman and men’s basketball head coach Brad Stevens. Of course, the famed Butler bulldog mascots, Blue II and III, were on hand and received most of the attention. Butler Blue II recently retired from active duty and made his final official appearance for the school today. Blue III (Trip) is now the school’s official mascot.

Carpenter, a 2003 graduate from Butler’s College of Business in marketing, has gained verbal support from Butler and its many alumni in the past, but, for the second year in a row, the university will display a logo on his car. The Butler logo ran for the first time on Carpenter’s car in last year’s 500-Mile Race.

“I am pleased to have my alma mater’s logo is on the our Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet again in this year’s Indy 500,” said Carpenter, who won at IMS in the Freedom 100 in 2003, just a few days after his graduation. “We have had so much support over the years from the Butler alums, students, facility and fans that it is always an honor to carry the Butler colors in the race. I want to thank President Danko, Barry, Michael and Coach Stevens as well as Michael Kaltenmark and others for their participation with our team’s effort. We are excited to have the Butler logo back on our race car.”

Carpenter will be one of the few college graduates in the 33-driver Indy 500 starting field May 26. The Butler campus is within earshot of the famed “Brickyard.”
