Erc Hero Breen Helps To Keep The Race In Its Place In Ireland

Craig Breen took time out of his preparations for round five of the FIA European Rally Championship by going back to school.

Breen, who will pilot a Peugeot Rally Academy 207 Super 2000 on Giru di Corsica-Tour de Corse this week, visited St Declan’s Community College in Kilmacthomas, close to his home in County Waterford, Ireland, to give a talk to approximately 800 pupils on the importance of road safety.

The 23-year-old is an ambassador for Keep The Race In Its Place, a road safety initiative promoted by the Irish Road Safety Authority and Motorsport Ireland, as part of the FIA’s Action for Road Safety campaign.

“We took a rally car and a road car along to show them the differences between the two and explained all the various safety features,” said Breen, whose local event, the Ravens Rock Rally, will start close to the St Declan’s Community College in the summer. “The pupils actually get a one-hour road safety class each week so are fairly up to speed but this was another good way to get the message across. It’s a very good initiative and I’m lucky enough to have a profile that helps. If me supporting Keep The Race In Its Place saves one life then it’s a worthwhile job to do.”

Renato Pita, who will begin his ERC campaign in Corsica, is also supporting a road safety initiative, Etapa Segura, in his native Portugal.
