Monster Energy's Nate Adams Takes Bronze in Moto X Speed & Style X Games Barcelona 2013

Monster Energy’s Nate Adams claims third place as eight of the best riders in freestyle motocross battled it out in the Speed & Style competition, a unique format judged both on finishing order and difficulty of tricks.

In his first competition in over a year, Adams won his 15th X Games medal after pulling out all the stops against Ronnie Faisst in the heats, and clinching the deal over Monster Energy team mate, Andre Villa, in the battle for bronze. Whilst an unlucky fall on the first turn of his semi final against Mat Rebeaud, saw him just miss out on a top spot place.

Speaking of his medal Adams said, “It’s crazy how life turned out. When I was younger I was never the rider to get sponsored. I just stuck with it and worked hard. Now here I am with fantastic sponsors. Such accomplishment to say I'm a professional rider”.

At the start of the night, pitched against each other in the second heat, Monster Energy’s Edgar Torronteras and Villa battled it out with Torronteras pulling crazy tricks, relishing in the support of his home crowd, he was first across the finish line, but Villa was the one to be rewarded with a semi-final spot, having racked up more points on style.

Next, a tightly fought head-to-head in the fourth heat saw Adams and Faisst almost take each other out on the first corner. Faisst stormed ahead on speed, but it was Adams’s superior backflip variations that saw him through to the semis with a total of 87.33 points.

The first semi-final ended with Villa leaving the title race after a high powered contest against Mike Mason had both riders throwing huge tricks on every jump, Villa, unfortunately missing out on those invaluable style points.

The fight for third was a close call between Villa and Adams, with almost nothing in it between the two Monster Energy riders as they put on a huge show with Adams taking it on points at the end.

When asked about his thoughts of the night, Adams explained, “It went ok. Everyone has their 'on' nights, it wasn't an 'on' night for me, I crashed in one race.

I thought I was on track for a gold, but it matters what you can do on your bad days and not your good days.”

Villa said of his fourth position, “Had a lot of fun today- it didn't go as planned, I was really hoping for a medal. Learnt a lot though- Speed and Style is a big learning curve, I had a close race with Nate in the race for 3rd and 4th. It is what it is – 4th place! I don't get too worked up anymore. I try not to let my ambition get in the way and still enjoy myself out there.”
