2013 Indianapolis (Indy 500): IndyCar Bump Day Qualifying Preview

By Mike Sulka

Thirty-three IndyCars will be lined up to race in the 2013 Indianapolis 500, and it appears that bumping will make a return after a one-year hiatus of painless qualifying.

While we didn't say there would be a full day of harsh drama for the Row 11 club, but based on the numbers one of the following drivers won't make the big show next Sunday:

Yet to Qualify

Graham Rahal
Josef Newgarden
Sebastian Saavedra
Tristan Vautier
Ana Beatriz
Pippa Mann
Buddy Lazier
Michel Jourdain Jr
Conor Daly
Katherine Legge

As for who to pull for, very few of these drivers are regulars on the IndyCar circuit. Graham Rahal had a rough Pole Day as he was bumped from the fastest 24 drivers on the day, but he should be safely in the show for Sunday. The same is true for Josef Newgarden.

Sebastian Saavedra, Tristan Vautier, and Ana Beatriz are all regulars in the series and we expect them to make the 2013 Indianapolis 500.

As for the rest, the most likely the bubble contenders will be Jourdain Jr, Daly or Legge. None of the three are regulars, and if they miss the race, they miss the race.

So enjoy the fact that bumping is set to return to the Indianapolis 500. I'm just don't think the drama will without some bigger names on the bubble.
