Albatec Racing Aims For Hungarian Spoils

Albatec Racing will field two Peugeot 208s this weekend (May 25/26) in round three of the 2013 FIA European Rallycross Championship at the Nyirád Motorsport Centre, Hungary. Established just five months ago, the fledgling team has produced from scratch two identical 600bhp, two-litre turbocharged powerhouses, for 2011 MSA British Rallycross Vice-Champion Andy Scott and former Super 1600 and Touring Car European Champion Michaël De Keersmaecker.

Showing the car’s potential in the opening rounds, Scott and De Keersmaecker powered the Albatec Peugeot 208 to heat victory in Great Britain and Portugal. Now with both cars entered into the rallycross arena for the first time this season, hopes are high of bagging a good haul of points across the board as the team bids to consolidate its reputation as a front-running outfit.

Heading into the third round of the re-branded RallycrossRX on the back of a superb British Rallycross Championship victory at Knockhill, Team Principal Scott is in high spirits despite it being his first ever outing in Nyirád. While De Keersmaecker, who rates the circuit among his favourites, heads into race action determined to capitalise on his knowledge of the 1.2km track, and build on his strong showing in Portugal last time out.

With 20 of Europe’s best Supercar drivers battling head-to-head over four qualifying heats, two semi finals and the all-important final, car reliability is key and the Peugeot 208 has proved itself to be more than up to the challenge. During the four-week break since Montalegre, Team Manager Marc Laboulle, and the rest of the technical team, has worked hard to ensure that both cars are fully prepared to the highest standard to ensure they can continue to build on that in Hungary.

Resuming battle against a competitive field that includes RallycrossRX points leader reigning European Rallycross Champion Timur Timerzyanov and former World Rally Champion Petter Solberg, the Albatec Racing pairing of Scott and De Keersmaecker will commence track action with official practice on Saturday, 25 May.

The first of four heats take place later that day, with the remaining heats, semi finals and all-important final kicking off Sunday’s activities. (All timings are provisional and subject to change.)

Andy Scott, Albatec Racing Driver car #26:

“I haven’t raced at Nyirád before but I’ve heard only good things about it so I’m really looking forward to racing there. It has a reputation of being one of the best circuits on the European schedule and is reputed to be very challenging. Naturally we have big expectations for the team now with both Peugeot 208s running which will allow us to share data across both cars, and we have every reason to believe we will be competitive from the outset.

“I know Michaël has a lot of experience racing at Nyirád and rates it as one of his favourite circuits so he will certainly have high expectations of a good result. After my win at Knockhill in the British Championship round, I’m fired up for another strong finish next weekend and it will definitely be our intention to have both cars reach the final.

“The recent news of Sebastian Loeb coming into RallycrossRX for the Loheác round is also a very welcome boost to the series, and is a reflection of the hard work that IMG has spent in raising the profile of the series, which can only be a good thing for RallycrossRX and for rallycross in general.”

Albatec Racing Driver, Michaël De Keersmaecker #9:

“I’m looking forward to racing at Nyirád this weekend as it’s a very exciting circuit to race on. With the many changes in levels, and the small jump at the first corner, it’s also spectacular to watch, and I like it very much.

”The team has, I know, worked hard on the car since Portugal, and hopefully we will see some improvements during free practice. My aim this weekend will certainly be to get into the Supercar final where I believe a podium finish is possible.”

Marc Laboulle, Albatec Racing Team Manager:

“Hungary will see the first time that Albatec Racing has run in its normal configuration, with both Peugeot 208s racing so we now have the maximum chance to get the results we are capable of. We are working hard with our engine partner Oreca to ensure we have a good package so we can provide the best car possible for both drivers.

“Michaël very much enjoys the Nyirád track so I’m sure he will go there with big expectations of a good result, while Andy’s shakedown test with the new car was very promising, and we made the necessary changes to the set-up to ensure that he is happy with it. I’m sure going into the next round of RallycrossRX on the back of winning a national championship round will also put him in high spirits.

“So now we have two happy drivers, and two great Peugeot 208s and while we will continue to learn and progress, I think it is possible to have two good results. My job will be to listen to the drivers, who naturally have very different requirements, to ensure they have the best possible tools to do the job. I understand what they need, so my personal objective is to give them their dream car. Our season starts here!”
