Tight Points Battle Plus Technical Track Equals Perfect Storm at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

The Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda participants will have no trouble fitting in to what's been referenced as the most competitive racetrack in the United States; the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Punctuate this by the fact that only two points separate the top three drivers in the IMSA Development Series after four rounds, and the result may prove to be record-breaking.

Leading the way with 58 points is Comprent Motor Sports driver Sean Rayhall who stole the show at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca May 9-11, winning both races in his Lites 1 √Član DP-02. Just one point behind Rayhall is JDC Motorsports' Mikhail Goikhberg (57 points) with Ryan Booth of Performance Tech on his tail (56 points).

The No. 14 entry of Sean Rayhall at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

After four weeks of preparation and time testing the cars since racing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda participants load in on Wednesday at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The IMSA Development Series visits the 13-turn road circuit for the first time since 2011.

Drivers will participate in a test day to adjust to the clockwise course after running counter-clockwise at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. All the series participants mastered the corkscrew in Monterey, Calif., and look forward to yet another significant race course elevation change in the "Keyhole" and the "Esses" in Lexington, Ohio.

To beef up the already stiff competition, three new drivers join the grid at Mid-Ohio: Michal Chlumecky, Brian Alder and Guy Laporte. Chlumecky, running with Ansa Motorsports, is familiar with the road-racing circuit after taking the track in the series' last visit to Mid-Ohio in the Lites 2 category. BAR1 Motorsports team owner Alder in his Lites 2 entry is the lone Ohio-native on the grid and looks to have a solid race in his first time behind the wheel in IMSA competition. Laporte will also be making the trip from Montreal, Quebec for his series debut.

The No. 5 entry of Scott Tucker at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
In the Masters class Scott Tucker and Level 5 Motorsports have built a significant lead after two wins and a second-place finish this year. Eurosport Racing's Jon Brownson is second in the Masters standings, just 18 points behindTucker. 8Star Motorsports driver Fransesco de Leonardis will make his L1 debut at Mid-Ohio and give the experienced drivers a fresh car to battle.

Twenty-three total drivers take the track Friday morning for the first of two practice sessions. The field will make adjustments necessary for running on the narrow, 2.258-mile course. Race One is slated to go green at 1:45 p.m. Saturday for a 30-minute sprint. Race Two begins Sunday at 12:40 p.m. For series news and updates follow @IMSALites on Twitter or Facebook. Live timing and scoring, spotter guides and full entry lists are available on the series website.
