Szymczak Goes Quickest In Mazda MX-5 Cup Practice One At Mid-Ohio

Christian Szymczak, of Palos Verdes, Calif., clocked the quickest time in Practice One on Friday leading up to Saturday’s Round Five of the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Ara Malkhassian, of Houston, and Patrick Gallagher, of Thornville, Ohio, completed the top three.

Szymczak, in the No. 34 ALARA Racing MX-5, lapped the 13-turn, 2.258-mile course in 1:38.485 (82.538 mph), a time quicker than the current record of 1:39.675 (81.553 mph) set by Stevan McAleer last year. Szymczak has made a habit of being quick right off the trailer, as he set the fast lap in each of the opening practice sessions this year.

“I think we got the car sorted out early,” Szymczak said. “It felt really good this morning. Ken [Murillo] has it dialed in, and we’re off to a great start at ALARA Racing.

“We did a mock-qualifying session today, so hopefully we can stay in that same form for qualifying tomorrow. We’re going to try to continue to be consistently quick and stick a lap in there.”

The No. 11 ALARA Garage/ALARA Racing MX-5, with Malkhassian behind the wheel, ran his personal fast lap of 1:39.173 (81.965 mph), which was good enough for second in the session.

Gallagher, the local favorite wearing a custom helmet celebrating his status as a nearby Ohio State University student for his home race, finished the session third, logging a time of 1:39.291 (81.868 mph) in the No. 28 MAZDASPEED/Howard Concrete Pumping/CTL Engineering MX-5.

Championship point-leader Elliott Skeer, of Vista, Calif., ended the session in fourth with a 1:39.410 (81.770 mph). Skeer has just an 11 point season lead in the No. 17 Pelican Replacement Windows/ZoomZoomNation.com/Alpinestars MX-5 entering Mid-Ohio.

Mazda MX-5 Cup veteran Jeff Mosing, of Austin, Texas, completed the top-five practice times with a 1:39.417 (81.764 mph), piloting the No. 9 ALARA Racing MX-5 for the first time in 2013. Mosing, who finished fourth in the 2011 Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship, is pulling double duty as he will compete in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Street Tuner class.

Kenton Koch, of Glendora, Calif., led the opening practice for the third time this year in the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge class, behind the wheel of the No. 63 Skip Barber Racing School SBMX-5 with a lap of 1:40.357 (80.998 mph).

“The session went pretty well,” Koch said. “I just needed to get used to the track a little more. I was able to get up to speed decently quick. The surface changes of the pavement make the track really difficult to get used to in one session. So, we’re going to use the next session to really dial the car in.”

Drake Kemper, of Toluca, Calif., in the No. 99 Royal Rugby SBMX-5, and Lucas Bize, of New York, N.Y., in the No. 60 SBMX-5, completed the top-three in class with a 1:41.357 (80.215 mph) and 1:42.025 (79.674 mph), respectively.

The next on-track session for the Mazda MX-5 Cup teams is practice session two, scheduled for 5:15 p.m. (EDT). Qualifying is scheduled for Saturday at 8:00 a.m. (EDT), followed by Race One of the doubleheader event at 2:30 p.m. (EDT). Race Two takes to the lights Sunday at 10:10 a.m. (EDT).
