Oil Leak Ends Nunez's Day At Mid-Ohio

While Tristan Nunez became the youngest class winner in Rolex Series history at Detroit earlier this month, the momentum didn't carry over to Mid-Ohio SportsCar Course.

The GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series' youngest driver and his SpeedSource co-driver Joel Miller's day was ended early with an oil leak, which terminated the pair's bid to give Mazda and VISIT FLORIDA a second-straight victory. The #00 Visit Florida SKYACTIV diesel Maxda6 car was credited with a third-place result.

"What an amazing track Mid-Ohio is," said Nunez. "Besides Sebring it's definitely a new favorite track of mine. First of all I have to congratulate Sylvain [Tremblay] and Tom [Long] on their first victory in the 70 car! It was a disappointing finish for us with the oil leak but it was not anyone's fault it was just one of those things you can't see coming. But the reliability in both cars the whole weekend was incredible! The SpeedSource crew has definitely made the new Mazda6 SKYACTIV diesel one fast and fun piece of machinery to drive! I'm really looking forward to the Glen; another track I have yet to compete at but I learned Mid-Ohio with no problem therefore I have no worries going into the next race weekend Big thank you to Visit Florida and Mazda for all the support!"

The 17-year-old Nunez was making his first stop at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course's 15-turn, 2.258-mile road circuit. After extensive time on iRacing's virtual Mid-Ohio course, Nunez was eager to get on the actual track for laps around the 50-year-old facility.

The #00 Visit Florida SKYACTIV diesel Maxda6 opened practice third on the time charts for the first two practice sessions with a best time of 1:28.996. The SpeedSourse team chose to sit out the third in advance of qualifications. Nunez then qualified the car on Friday second quick with a time of 1:28.444, giving the duo their best time of the weekend heading into The Diamond Cellar Classic.

The #00 Visit Florida car rolled from the second position within the GX class with Nunez behind the wheel. The Boca Raton, Fla., native held the spot for most of his stint before light rain and a yellow came out. Nunez handed over the keys while in second to his co-driver Miller at about the halfway point. It wasn't much longer that on Lap 66, the SKYACTIV diesel Maxda6 would retire to the sidelines with an oil leak.

Fellow SpeedSource drivers Sylvain Tremblay and Tom Long where able to take the GX class honors in the No. 70 Mazda6, picking up the third consecutive win for MAZDASPEED/Speedsource, but the first for the Tremblay and Long.

Nunez returns to the racetrack after a two-week hiatus with the GRAND-AM Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen, at Watkins Glen International Raceway, 3.40-mile, 11-turn road course. Practice is set to begin on Fri., June 28 at 1:30 p.m. ET. Qualifications are scheduled for Sat., June 29 at 11:05 a.m. ET with the Round 7 race at 11 a.m. ET on Sun., June 30 and broadcast LIVE on FOX Sports' SPEED channel.

In addition to VISIT FLORIDA & MAZDASPEED, Nunez's racing efforts are also supported by: Federal-Mogul's ChampionĀ® Spark Plugs, Bell Helmets, SparCo, OMP, and Uncle Jim. Off the track, Nunez is an advocate for safer driving as part of the Safe American Foundation and his self-made Dnt txt n drV campaign and is represented by Los Angeles-based BRANDed Management.
