2013 Le Mans 24: Honeywell Turbo at 24 Hours of Le Mans

Honeywell (NYSE:HON) Turbo Technologies has helped boost the past 13 champions into Victory Lane at the 24 Hours of Le Mans by providing reliable and innovative turbocharging technology, dating back to 2000.

This year, Honeywell turbochargers are looking to earn their share of a 14th consecutive Le Mans victory, and will be part of Audi Sport Team Joest which has three R-18 e-tron quattro cars competing in the Le Mans Prototype 1 (LMP1) category representing the leading edge of racing technology.

“Le Mans is an annual test for our motorsport capabilities and one which we take immense pride in having had sustained success with our racing partners well into our second decade now,” said Gavin Donkin, Honeywell Turbo Technologies vice president for Advanced Technologies and Innovation. “Le Mans is a development crucible demanding performance and endurance of our people and our technology. We would like nothing more than to help Audi achieve its fourth consecutive LMP victory.”

For the company that provides turbochargers for all types of cars and trucks around the world, the 24 Hours of Le Mans provides the toughest test possible for its product. The race cars will cover more than 3,100 miles in a 24-hour period and will spend 85 percent of the race at full throttle.

Honeywell turbochargers have been an important contributor to the success of a winning Le Mans effort, providing near-instantaneous response through each of the circuit’s 21 turns. The ability to get back to full power is the key at corners like Tertre Rouge, which leads to the 215-mph Mulsanne Straight, and again at the Mulsanne Corner where drivers slow to 70 mph to negotiate the sharp 90-degree turn that leads to the challenging Indianapolis and Arnage sections of the track.

Honeywell turbochargers have been equal to the task over the last 13 editions of the famed race, helping power Audi to 11 victories in 13 years at Le Mans. In addition, Honeywell turbos were on the winning Bentley Speed 8 in 2003 and the victorious Peugeot 908 in 2009 and which also broke the race lap record in 2010.

More impressively, Honeywell has provided turbocharged solutions for multiple engine types among Audi’s victories helping power six-, eight-, 10- and 12-cylinder configurations ranging from 3.6 to 5.5 liters and using both gasoline and diesel fuel.

Honeywell takes the data gathered at Le Mans and applies the lessons learned to the same turbochargers that are available in many passenger cars and trucks around the world. Using lighter, more robust components in construction helps save space and weight while delivering the top-flight performance that consumers and manufacturers demand.

As the world’s auto manufacturers continue revealing their plans for 2013 and 2014 consumer vehicles, it becomes more evident that turbocharged engines are a key component in the search for performance, fuel economy and the reduction of emissions.
