Alessi, Hahn Sweep Motorcycle-Superstore.com Holeshot Points At Budds Creek

Mike Alessi waited five races to earn any points in the Motorcycle-Superstore.com Holeshot Championship, but he quickly made up for lost ground Saturday by sweeping both 450cc starts at the Red Bull Budds Creek National to catapult into a tie for second place in the season-long challenge.

Making his first start of the outdoor season, Wil Hahn did the same thing in 250cc action, moving into sole possession of first place in his category by taking both holeshots on his GEICO Honda.

For their efforts, both Alessi and Hahn earned a total of four points. For Alessi, that put him in a tie with James Stewart, who swept both holeshots and a bonus point for doing so at the season opener in Sacramento, Calif. Alessi and Stewart now trail 450cc leader Justin Barcia by three points with seven races and 14 motos remaining on the schedule.

"Getting both holeshots today was big because we got the maximum number of points and we're right back into this thing," Alessi said. "It's been tough this year. The other guys are really fast, and there's more of them compared to last year. Everyone wants to get a good start. It's harder to do than ever.

"I've worked really hard in these last two weeks to get my starts back, so I'm pumped to see it come together today. Getting good starts, it's one of those things that if you try too hard it just gets worse. You have to just do it and let it happen. I feel like I'm there now and that's exciting."

Alessi ended the day in 11th place after finishes of third and 34th on his Smartop Suzuki.

Hahn didn't look rusty after missing the first four races of the motocross season recovering from a broken hand suffered May 4 in Las Vegas. His handiwork, combined with the parity in the class so far, allowed him to move into first place by two points over a pack of five riders.

"I want to win that $15K," said Hahn, who finished sixth and fifth for an overall fifth-place ranking. "That's some serious money that Motorcycle Superstore has put up, and we are all pumped up to go after it. I really thought that after missing four races I'd be out of it, or that it would be really tough for me, but so many different riders have earned holeshots this year that everyone is bunched up. It opened the door for me.

"Good starts are crucial, and it's something I take very seriously. I was hoping I'd be up to form and I was, at least at the start. I got tired at the end of both motos, and that's from not riding as much, but I can't complain about today at all."

Points for the Motorcycle Superstore Holeshot Championship are earned in every moto in the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship. The first moto is worth one point, the second moto awards two points, and any rider who takes both holeshots at the same race receives a bonus point. At the end of the year, the top rider in the 450 class will be paid $25,000 while the best 250 rider gets $15,000.

The series resumes next Saturday with the Moto-X 338 National in Southwick, Mass.

Motorcycle Superstore Holeshot Championship points after five events:
450 class -- 1. Justin Barcia, 7 points; 2t. Mike Alessi, 4; 2t. James Stewart, 4; 3. Josh Grant, 2; Ryan Villopoto, 1
250 class -- 1. Wil Hahn, 4 points; 2t. Zach Bell, 2; 2t. Jeremy Martin, 2; 2t. Marvin Musquin, 2; 2t. Zach Osborne, 2; 2t. Eli Tomac, 2; 7t. Blake Baggett, 1; 7t. Justin Bogle, 1
